Her fortune made my stomach clench, and I couldn’t help but think of the three embryos I’d created with Allee’s eggs. My voice unsteady, I asked, “Butterfly, do you want to have kids?”

Her face lit up. “Yes. In fact, lots. I hated being an only child. I even want to adopt a few. What about you? You want kids?”

My voice grew more edgy. “Yeah, I think so.” On the verge of telling her about the embryos, I stopped when she insisted I open my fortune cookie.

Putting the cookie to my mouth, I bit off the plastic and then tore the cookie apart. I read my fortune.

“What does it say?” she asked eagerly.

“‘You will be going on a life-changing journey.’”

“That’s interesting. I wonder what that means.”

I had no clue. We exchanged fortunes as my eyes roamed the loft.

There was no doubt in my mind that Allee had something to do with them.
