They fell into silence again for a few moments. Lily moving her hand in a circle around Kingsley’s chest.

“Before I went all Hulk at your injuries and Jessica performed her magic on me, you asked if Ebony’s baby could be Christian’s, why?” Hunter asked as he ran his fingers through Kingsley’s shaggy hair.

“I don’t know. Just a feeling. When I was in the garden with them and Ebony attacked me, Christian held her closely and rested his hand over her stomach. It was simply a protective gesture, but it just felt like there was more to it than there should have been. It’s probably me expecting the worst from them.” Kingsley shrugged his shoulders.

“No.” Hunter sat up in the bed and placed his hand on Kingsley’s chest over his heart. “You have a good heart, Kingsley Ross, and a sharp mind. If you sense something’s wrong, then it is. Christian has always been loyal to me, but he was the one who immediately offered to rule in place of me until the baby came of age…Lily?” Hunter looked across to the bear, and she joined her hand with his on Kingsley’s chest. “You said that Nuka has been turning pack members and planting spies to bring the packs around to his side. It wouldn’t surprise me if Ebony was one of them. She’s out for revenge because I cast her aside after she abused Teagan, and her true colors were shown. I wonder whether Nuka and Ebony have corrupted my beta.” With a sad expression, Hunter looked down at the bed. Kingsley was aware that Hunter and Christian had known each other all their lives and were close friends. This war was already destroying too much, and it wasn’t over yet.

“I’m certain I must be wrong,” Kingsley tried to reassure his lover.

“I don’t think you are, and if Christian is trying to take over the pack, he has a good following and lots of respect. Things could get difficult around here…”

“We’ll stand at your side and support you,” Lily interrupted.

“Agreed,” Kingsley added immediately.

Hunter shook his head. “No, I want you to promise me you’ll both go to Kas in Montana. I know he’ll look after you.” He couldn’t stand to look them both in the eye as he spoke.

Kingsley reached out, and pulling the wolf toward him, he said, “We’ll be at your side until the last breath we take. We’re going nowhere, Hunter.” Then Kingsley kissed him.
