Page 54 of Cage

Cage had ordered some crayons, paper, and coloring books from Amazon and before he knew it, Katie was in a world of her own.

It felt magical for Cage to see Katie so happy.

Magical almost.

Cage’s blood ran cold when he considered the risk Katie had been under when she was alone at her place.

But that feeling passed.

Katie was safe now.

Cage decided to let Katie get on with her coloring. He had some emails to sort through. Plus, it was time for him to renew his home insurance. All the boring adult tasks that simply had to be done.

But with Katie being so deep into her own fun, it felt like a good time to get on with it.

Once he was done with his mundane tasks, Cage looked down and saw that Katie was still having fun.

She seemed almost serene.

Like she was there, but her mind had been transported somewhere else a little bit at the same time.

‘Are you… in Little Space?’ Cage enquired, unsure of himself. ‘I must admit it’s not something I’m an expert in. But you look so happy and relaxed. Natural too. It’s a joy to see.’

Katie turned and smiled.

Then she nodded.

Cage didn’t need to hear Katie confirm it in words, the answer to his question was obvious.

‘Daddy, do you want to play a game?’ Katie asked a few minutes later as she hung up a drawing of a rainbow with two unicorns walking up to the top of it. ‘I think I’ve got one you might quite enjoy!’

Cage put down his iPad and arched his eyebrow.

‘Sounds interesting,’ Cage said. ‘Tell me more.’

‘Well, you know those stuffies you bought,’ Katie said, her voice full of hope and high spirits. ‘How about we play a game of cops and robbers with them? Even better, we could put on a show!’

This wasn’t exactly in Cage’s wheelhouse of skills.

But as it was Katie asking him, he wasn’t about to put a dampener on things.

‘Okay, but you know I’m not as good at voices as you, right?’ Cage grumbled. ‘I’m no Robert DeNiro.’

Katie laughed.

‘Ha-ha! That doesn’t matter, you’ll be brilliant! I know you will!’ Katie said, rushing over to the large wooden box with the stuffies spilling out over the top of.

Cage momentarily felt a little self-conscious.

His life was built around cracking cases and hunting down bad guys. The concept of putting on a play with a cast of stuffies wasn’t exactly something he had done before.

Hell, it was something Cage had never even considered up until this moment.

But he wasn’t about to let Katie down.

Katie’s fun was the most important thing to Cage.

He was determined to give the stuffie play his all.
