There was a reason for him to leave work.
A motivating factor in his life other than solving criminal cases and putting bad guys away behind bars.
Of course, that reason was Katie.
That being said, Cage had still been spending a lot of time in the office. The extra-hot weather had seen a rise in crime.
It always did.
But this time it was like people were acting totally crazy.
A less experienced detective would potentially have struggled with the intensity of the increased work.
But Cage took it all in his stride.
And kept on working at his own thorough pace too.
But it wasn’t just Cage who was getting super-involved with work.
Katie had been pursuing a new dream too.
After being so impressed with Katie’s character voices during their bedtime story, Cage had set up a recording studio for her in his apartment.
It was great to see Katie committing to something that she was passionate about. And seriously talented at as well.
When Cage arrived home, he was extra careful to not make any noise.
As he suspected, Katie was in the middle of a recording session. Cage chuckled very quietly to himself as he heard Katie switching from one cutesy voice to another.
It was impressive to listen to.
Katie was using her own laptop as the recorder, but Cage had bought Katie a professional quality microphone and some equally impressive home studio software.
Cage knew that Katie was passionate about performance, so the cost was irrelevant. He wanted to do whatever it took to make Katie feel that she had a shot at succeeding in showbiz.
It may not be Broadway yet, but it was a start.
That was for sure.
Cage carefully walked into the kitchen area of the apartment and took out a cold beer from the refrigerator. He expertly opened the bottle with minimum fuss, the tiniest of fizzing noises coming out of the bottle.
Satisfied that he wasn’t disturbing Katie, Cage took a slug of the beer.
It tasted good.
It was just what he needed after an exhausting and at times stressful shift. Plenty of work and not enough time to do it. It was always the way.
Suddenly, the sound of Katie’s voice stopped.
‘Hey! You’re home. Why didn’t you come and say hello?’ Katie asked, popping her head out of the guest bedroom door.
‘Didn’t want to disturb you,’ Cage said, his tiredness vanishing as he saw Katie’s exuberance. ‘Good session?’
Katie smiled shyly.
‘It sure was,’ Katie said.
There was something she wasn’t saying.
