“Why is that?”

“I don’t know…” I mumbled, not wanting to divulge what happened. Just thinking about someone on the other side of my front door last night was a nightmare. I didn’t want to think about it.

“Take care of yourself,” said Phil finally, parking in front of my house.

“I will.”

But I wasn’t prepared for what I’d find next.

As I walkedinto my home, something on the kitchen counter caught my eye. I wanted to sob with fear when I spotted a little note. Maybe it was my maid leaving me a message, I thought hopefully, but after reading it…I realized it definitely wasn't the case.

Holding the paper in my trembling hands, I read the note again:

You’ll be mine soon, Pinkie. And I’ll be your breeder. Are you excited for the little alpha babies running around?

My heart was racing out of control at this point.

I dropped the letter back onto the kitchen counter, worried to death that he was lurking in any of the rooms with a knife. He wanted to fuckingbreedme.

Was this another one of those cases where an omega had gone missing? Was I the next target? What the hell did he want withme?

I couldn’t relax in my home anymore until I called some sort of personal bodyguard service. I really didn’t have a choice right now, and I needed them to look around to make sure the creep wasn’t hanging around.

But I couldn’t stand around the kitchen like a sitting duck.

I ran to the office across from the kitchen and locked the door. I started to look up all the bodyguard services we had on Howl’s Edge. I needed the very best. My hands were shaking, and I had to set my phone down for several minutes first. I paced around the office, pondering what to do. I’d avoided hiring bodyguards for so long.

I finally picked my phone back up and dialed.

“It’s so hot out here,” mumbled Adrian as my entire pack watched me aim at the target. The smell of gunpowder surrounded the field of the Elite Protection Club at the gun range.

It was a normal, typical day of bodyguard training.

“Adrian, if I have to hear you complain one more time...I swear to god,” I said out loud, trying to aim at the head of the dummy standing on a pole fifty yards away. “I will turn this gun around and shoot you instead.”

“Fuck you,” mumbled Adrian under his breath.

My pack and I knew that Adrian was nearing the end of his rope at the guard camp. He was the youngest and the most impatient of the group. Even though his family forced him to be here, he wasn’t into being a bodyguard. It came naturally to some people, like Ethan, who couldn’t wait to shoot the target next - a rifle strapped to his shoulder. He was sitting on the bench along with Lucas and Cooper, the two deltas in my pack.

Ethan, Adrian, and I were alpha wolves.

The other packs were also practicing in the field, and sometimes, I wished I could swap out Adrian with someone who actually liked this job.

I adjusted my goggles and ear protection, feeling a sense of excitement and focus. This was my time to practice and refine my skills. I felt the weight of the pistol in my hand, the cold metal reassuring against my skin. The gun’s grip was familiar, molded to fit my hand perfectly. My heart rate slowed as I focused on the target, my surroundings fading away until it was just me and the bullseye.

The round struck the target with a satisfying thud, blowing off the dummy’s head.

“Fuck yes,” I said. Normally, it would take me two tries, and Ethan would beat me on his first try. But not today. I turned to Ethan with a grin. “Your turn, big guy.”

Ethan chuckled, a low rumble in his throat, and his short red beard bobbed.

“You got lucky,” said Ethan. “Watch me get closer to the mark there.”

But before he could show off his skills and one-up me, our boss, Mark, approached us.
