The ride was smooth with the truck, even though it got scary at times when the water was too deep. I couldn’t believe I was about to stay out here all night. It looked impossible to get back home.

“Here we are,” said Nick, peering out the foggy window. “Home sweet home.”

JADE

My purse nearly fell into the harsh waters below when I stepped out of the truck.

Caleb appeared out of nowhere in front of the door. His arms outstretched as if to carry me.

“I can walk,” I said. His black hair was soaked as he stood under the rain waiting patiently for me as if I was a petulant child.

“Jade, please,” he said.

He was being overprotective again.

I sighed and allowed him to carry me. I could smell his earthy smell of wildness and musk as he carried me. The rain trickled down my face, and I licked it off my lips. I flinched in his arms each time the thunder boomed, but he held me even closer to him.

As he jogged through the flood waters with his powerful legs, I looked at the elegant architectural lines of his house, with its three stories and curved bays. Then, I looked over to the guesthouse outside of it. The windows were all boarded up except for a few, and the walls were singed with black blotches or fire.

“Looks creepy,” I said out loud. Then I realized how rude it sounded.

“My mother lives there,” he grunted, wading against the current of the water. His chest muscles were tense as he held me tighter against him, shielding me from the rain. “Don’t worry, omega. We’ll be inside warm and toasty soon.”

The wind was biting against my skin, but we were inside the house before I could feel the full effect. He set me down on my feet and disappeared off into the dark house, flipping on the light switches. I hung Dravin’s jacket behind the door and painstakingly peeled off my wet shoes and socks.

“There he is,” Nick chuckled when Caleb returned, holding a towel in his hands.

“I have a bath running for you,” said Caleb. “Please strip off your clothes.”

I reached out for the towel. “I can wash myself, thank you very much.”

“I wish to bathe you whether you like it or not,” insisted Caleb.

“It’s best to listen to him,” Dravin muttered in my ear. “He has literal OCD about this. Caleb takes care of his omegas.”

What the hell?!

“You want me to strip here? In front of you?” I said. I stepped back towards the door. “I’m not your omega, Caleb.”

He shut his eyes in frustration, taking a deep breath.

“I’m not going to do anything to you. Except to take care of you and make sure you don’t end up with a cold,” he said. “Jade?”

He looked at me questioningly. Even if I ran out of the front door, I had nowhere to go. I would die out there.

It was either that or allowing an alpha to take care of me to the fullest. My chest was rising and falling in rapid breaths. I felt like I was suffocating. I should never have gotten out of my car.

“It’s okay, take a couple deep breaths,” said Bruce, sensing my panic and need for space. He rubbed my back in comforting circular motions. He brought his lips to my neck, and I felt his warm breath as he gently purred into me. His alpha vibrations were calming to me, easing me into normal breathing. “He just wants to take care of you.”

“Get the bath ready, Nick.”

I melted back against Bruce’s frame. I could feel his wide, muscular chest despite the suit he was wearing. His hands swept around me, lifting my shirt by the hem. I allowed him to lift my shirt over my head. After all, they’d seen me half-naked at the agency today. But this felt way more intimate and less professional. Caleb watched as Bruce unsnapped my blue bra, but I still held it to my breasts in a panic.

“Don’t be nervous,” said Nick gently, tugging the bra from my hands. My face heated as I relinquished the bra, watching it dangle from Bruce’s pale, hairy wrist. My breasts were exposed now, my nipples hard from the cold.

I sneezed.
