“Even though you’re annoying as hell, you’re hot,” her friend said to me.
“Thanks,” I said gruffly as Tiana laughed softly. The omega thought this was funny. I thought the friend was a nuisance that needed to be dropped off at home as soon as possible.
“Tiana, maybe he could be your boyfriend,” she said. “Does he fit your requirements?”
“Lori, please,” sighed Tiana, and I smiled while driving. It was her turn to feel uncomfortable by her friend’s random remarks. I wanted to know all about this omega.Did she even have a boyfriend? Did she live in isolation?
After we dropped off her friend at her apartment, I started driving to where Tiana lived. She hesitated to give me her address but realized she didn’t have a choice. Did her parents coach her into not telling anyone where she lived? If so, that was why I couldn’t trace her.
“Do you live with family?” I asked in a conversational tone. If I could get her to trust me, she would open up.
“Yes, with my parents,” she said slowly. “And I have a boyfriend too.”
“So he lives with you too?” I asked, knowing full well she wasn’t mated to anyone. It was impossible that she was mated. Especially the way she was perfuming in my car right now.
“I…uhh,” she stumbled, realizing none of it made sense. “Yes, yes, he does.”
“Tell me about him.”
“He’s umm, big and plays football,” she said, her voice trailing off. As I stared at her in the rearview mirror, I admired how her cheeks turned pink and how she refused to look me in the eye. Maybe some part of her warned her that there was an alpha nearby.
I was the predator. And she was my prey.
When we reached her apartment, I parked the car in front of the building.
“I’d like to walk you inside. Is that alright?” I said to her as we both got out of the car.
She bit her lip.
“I don’t need you to walk me inside,” she protested. But I needed to see her living situation. I needed to know everything about her.
Before I took her.
“Just want to make sure you’re safe,” I said, and she nodded without a word. I followed her to the apartment building, watching her hands tremble as she unlocked the main glass door. We walked down a long narrow hallway that smelled of cigarettes and cats. Then she stopped in front of her door and tried to quietly unlock it, but the door flew open before she could stick the key in.
“You’re late,” said an older woman who looked similar to Tiana. She smiled politely when she saw me, but her face turned white, and I knew she knew what I was. An alpha werewolf at her doorstep. “Did you get yourself into trouble being out so late?”
“Lori was drunk, so I drove her car,” said Tiana, sounding exhausted. She sounded like she’d rather be anywhere else but here.
“Is she in trouble, officer?” asked the mother.
“No, since she has no past offenses,” I reassured her. I didn’t want her to be too harsh on this soft omega. I realized I needed to stop now before feelings grew on my end. I couldn’t fall for this omega. “Have a good night, folks.”
“Goodnight,” said Tiana as we made eye contact. It was like electricity between us when we locked eyes, and her mother ushered her inside quickly to block her. Like a stunned man, I quickly pulled my phone out, dialing my packmate’s number.
“Yo, yo,” greeted Antonio.
“Tony, I found her,” I said.
“God damn, after all these years?!”
“She must have been hiding or taking her omega heat suppressant pills,” I said, trying to think of how this elusive omega survived for years without an alpha pack to protect her.
“It looks like our mission here on the human lands is done,” said Tony. “It’s sad because the humans love my guitar playing.”
“You’ve gotten attached to human life,” I said dryly. “Tell Wesley the good news. We’ll meet up tomorrow and go through all her files. We have her name now.”
“Sounds good, cop,” said Tony. “I can’t wait to go back home. I almost forgot what Howl’s Edge looks like.”
