“It’s not just lust,” he said. “I think I’m starting to…I don’t know. Maybe you’re right.”
Was he about to admit his feelings for me? That I was his one true mate?
Right then, I wasn’t sure either, but the warm fuzzy feelings kept growing inside my heart, and I could feel it in my chest. It was crazy because we had known each other for less than two days.
Walkingdownstairs in the cold stone tower, I cinched my robe tighter around me. Kodan had fallen asleep while his knot rested inside of me.
I caught sight of Luke sitting on the floor of the empty living room, reading an old newspaper that he must have found on the wooden bookshelf.
I quietly snuck away, wondering where Luke was. I knew he was still upset with me, but I had to make things right.
“Hey, Luke,” I greeted, stepping down the last step.
He turned and looked up at me warily.
“Are we on speaking terms now?” asked Luke, setting the newspaper down. The dust from the paper settled around in little particles in the air.
I sat next to him on the floor, pulling my knees up to my chest, and leaned against the cold wall. Luke quickly grabbed one of the pillows, shoving it behind my back so I didn’t get cold. My heart warmed at his caring gesture, and I suddenly felt bad.
“I was scared,” I began. “I wasn’t sure if you really cared for me or if you were just waiting for an opportunity to marry me. Alphas will always hunt omegas.”
“I care for you, Lyra,” he said without hesitation, and I believed him. “I know how you feel about alphas in general. But I swear to you that even if you don’t want to be with me, I still want to stay friends with you.”
“Are you serious?”
“Dead serious.”
“I believe you,” I sighed, leaning against his arm. He wrapped his other arm around me, pulling me in for a hug. He purred, adeep rumble from his chest vibrating into my body, calming my racing heart.
“I miss you,” he said. “I miss the fun we used to have. The constant talking.”
“You meanmyconstant talking,” I laughed, willing to admit that.
“How are you feeling, though? With the sigma?”
“Do you mean Kodan?” I said, winking at him. I wondered if they would ever become close friends or even acquaintances.
“Yes, are you okay with everything?”
“For now, I think I’ll be fine,” I said. I wasn’t trusting of my own feelings yet, and I didn’t want to talk about it.
“Are the feelings fluttering inside you?”
“It is,” I giggled. It was a running joke between us whenever I spotted an attractive alpha when Luke escorted me somewhere. “But I don’t know whether to trust him.”
“He hasn’t broken his pact yet and hasn’t sent his Wild Wolfmen onto the mainland.”
“It’s only been two days,” I said. “He could easily throw me to the wolves. Literally.”
“If that ever happens, he’ll have to answer to me,” said Luke, his chest going up and down rapidly with his intense emotions. I could sense how much he cared for me, and I felt at ease with him again.
He was still my best friend, and I hadn’t lost that.
“Is it weird we’re married?” I asked out of the blue.
“Because I used to be your bodyguard?”
“Yes.”
