The early morning clouds burned off, leaving the sun to beam down on the festival. Ryan would usually focus on the games but unable to play, he could appreciate it all for the first time. The bright sun didn’t bother him, and he was sure it was making Alice’s freckles darker as he watched.
The colours of the flags dancing in the wind and the noise from the crowds all added to the day’s unique atmosphere. The smells and tastes from the food area were always tempting, but today, they seemed amazing.
“God, I love this bacon,” he sighed. Jake laughed at him.
“I’m sure love is what’s making that bacon taste so exceptional.”
“It’s not just me, then?” He examined Jake’s face closely. “I guess you would know.”
It was unusual to see Jake smile, and Ryan wondered if people could see something different in his own face.
“It’s weird how things smell different or taste better. Don’t expect me to explain it. I only know I like it.”
“I don’t remember staying at the festival when we weren’t playing before.” He hugged her jacket closely, following her movement on the court. “I get such a kick out of watching her play. Even looking after her sunglasses seems special. Is there something wrong with us?”
“I’m not in a rush for that to change if that’s what you mean.”
“No. I’m not either,” Ryan laughed.
“I’m afraid they aren’t doing very well in this match. Do you think they’ll want to go home if they lose?”
“They don’t look so happy.”
“Would you be?”
“No. No, I wouldn’t, but I hope Alice knows I’m proud of her.”
“Ryan, you have remembered what I said yesterday about Alice, I mean.”
“I know, I’m not going to push. Then again, I want to be there for her. I just wish I knew more about how she really feels about Tom.”
“Our Alice plays things pretty close to her chest. Even Grace can’t tell what she’s feeling at the moment.”
The game over,Ryan watched a dejected Alice walking towards him. His heart thundered, knowing he needed to say goodbye, at least for today.
His arms around her waist, he pulled her close, taking in the feel of her body merged with his. Not ready to let go.
“You played well there. Get that chin up again.”
“Thanks. I think it’s because I realise it’s time to leave. Grace is desperate for a shower, so I’m sure they’ll want to get off.”
“Thanks to Sam, I don’t have a car here, or I would drive you home.”
“It’s OK. I came with Grace and Jake; it seems rude not to go back with them.”
“Let me take the tent down, then I’ll help you get to Jake’s van.”
“It’s only there.”
With everything loaded far too quickly, the time to part was getting closer. Ryan wrapped his arms around her, lifting her. Her legs sprung around his body. His erection fought to be free.
Alice laid her head on his shoulder. “Thank you for pretending with me this weekend.”
“Who says I was pretending? See you Wednesday.”
“Wednesday?”
“For our date! We’ll both be training Tuesday and Thursday, so I’ll see you Wednesday.” It sounded so simple.
