Chapter Five
NATALIA TRIED TO CLINGto her preconceptions over the next few weeks, but it proved impossible as she got to know him better. He was kind, patient, and surprisingly funny. He treated her like a queen, showering her with gifts and attention. He was also an attentive lover, always putting her pleasure first. She found herself falling for him despite her reservations.
One night, as they lay together in bed, he asked her a question that caught her off guard. “Do you miss your friends?”
She blinked, surprised. “My friends?”
“From the rebellion. The ones you were with when we captured you.”
“Oh. Yes, I do.” She swallowed, her throat suddenly tight. “Why do you ask?”
“I was wondering if you would like to see them.”
“I would, yes.” She was shocked. “You’d allow me to see them?”
“Of course. You’re not a prisoner. You’re my proxy, and I want you to be happy.” His tongue trailed across her shoulder. “I hope you might visit them and see if your mother will consent to a summit with us.”
“A summit?” She was incredulous. “You want to meet with my mom?”
“Yes. I think it’s time to end the conflict between our peoples. Your mother is a powerful leader, and I believe she could help us reach a lasting peace.”
Natalia hesitated, unsure. “I’m not sure she’d agree to it.”
“Will you ask her?” He kissed her neck, making her shiver. “Please, vrash?”
“I’ll try.” She sighed, giving in. “I can’t promise anything.”
“That’s all I ask.” He smiled, his eyes glowing.
She smiled, her heart swelling with emotion. “You’re serious, right? This isn’t a way to track me as I lead you to them and scoop up everyone?”
He scowled. “No. I want peace, as do you. I think your mother is the key to that. Will you speak with her and tell her I want to meet?”
“I will, but I can’t guarantee she’ll agree.” Rosalie was even more stubborn than her.
“I know, but it’s a start.” He brushed his mouth against her lips. “Thank you, Natalia.”
