Lydia maintained that mutual gaze with me as genuine contentment flooded her eyes. I caught sight of something deeper moving through her expression right after, and I could feel that tether between us as it seemed to tighten. Wearing that pleasant look, she nodded and stepped inside.
After closing the door behind us, I gave her the official tour of the house, catching her awestruck look as she took it all in room by room. Everything went smoothly, and as we made our way upstairs, I couldn’t help as my mind drifted.
We were in a strange place, and that was easy enough to see.
We mated, and while I felt connected to her that way, I was well aware of the trust I still needed to gain. Even if she was receptive to me and what I had to say, going along with everything as well as she could, I could still sense that slight resistance from her.
Despite already being intimate with one another, that unspoken tension was palpable as we settled into bed and I carefully draped an arm over her waist, holding her close to me. I breathed in her scent, savoring it regardless.
I was certain we could get there eventually, but I had to treat our bond carefully. Lydia came from a less-than-ideal situation with plenty of emotions and revelations to sort through, and while it wouldn’t be easy, I was more than ready to stand by her while she endured it all.
Even if our relationship was still uncertain, I was prepared to protect her in any way I could and keep a watchful eye on the situation.
Since most alphas didn’t respond well to having their desired mate taken from them, I knew Jack wouldn’t just lay down and take it. At some point, he would eventually find Lydia, and he would be able to sense that bond. If he was serious about having her for himself, then I had no doubt he’d put up a fight.
I had the sinking feeling he’d be willing to do whatever it took to get her back.
While I didn’t want to bring any conflict to my pack, I was willing to make an exception for her.
Even if it was all so new still, she was my Luna, and I had no qualms about protecting what was mine.
Chapter 14 - Lydia
I never imagined it would be quite so difficult to detangle the web of lies my parents had weaved since the day they pulled me away from our old pack, but at the very least, it was easier knowing I had Sebastian to lean on.
We were taking it day by day while I got used to a different way of living, and while it was bumpy at times, I found myself appreciating the small things.
With my parents, I constantly felt like I was walking on eggshells. I was afraid of misstepping or doing something they disapproved of, and I typically didn’t have the freedom to dictate my time. One way or another, they kept me preoccupied with things they deemed necessary, like maintaining the house, learning to be a good mate, and not straying far from Jack’s teachings.
After stepping away from it all, I could see more clearly how everything we did brought us back to him. We never made a single choice that went against his values, and we were more than careful about how our family was perceived by him.
If he told us to go right, we went right. If he wanted us to plant a certain flower outside our house, we did. It didn’t matter the lengths we would go to—if he wanted it done, we did it without question.
That concept didn’t exist with Sebastian.
Instead, he’d let me know his responsibilities for the day, then tell me to do as I pleased. Every day was my choice, so long as nothing else was going on, and those small freedoms seemed so much bigger thanks to him.
If I felt like going to the coffee shop, he’d send me some money, and I’d have free rein to do as I wished. If I wantedto spend some time in the park, I could simply go do it. Plus, everyone was more than friendly, and they helped keep me company if it seemed like I could use it.
It was challenging to put into words but being with Sebastian and his pack helped me see things so differently quickly.
“I’m heading to the office for the day, but I should be back around five or so,” Sebastian said, reaching for his travel mug full of coffee while wearing a sleek navy button-down and black trouser ensemble that caught my attention.
I didn’t think he could be even more attractive than he already was, but I was immediately corrected. The sight of the material clinging slightly to his biceps stirred that longing within me, making me wish I could feel him.
In a flurry of movement, rushing to get on the road, Sebastian swooped by me, kissed my temple without much thought, and hurried toward the door. “Text me if you need anything. I’ll see you soon.”
While the light press of his lips against my skin startled me initially as those tingles moved through me, I let that warmth surround me as I smiled and said goodbye before he slipped out of the house.
Left alone in the kitchen, I tried to understand how that small yet impactful contact meant so much to me. Regardless of the reason, I savored how it felt and let my mind drift back to that night.
Even if I had kissed him in a silent rebellion against my parents, it snowballed into the perfect moment. It kickstarted our bond and changed everything for us.
With a lighter heart, I began my morning with only Sebastian on my mind.
Eventually, I got myself ready and rifled through some of the clothes he had given me since everything I owned was back with my parents. I found a suitable sundress that caught my eye. I pulled a knit cardigan over the top, and by the time I ended up back downstairs, the doorbell ran out through the house.
Intrigued, I made my way over to the front door and hesitated when I saw Zoe standing on the other side.
