“Red…”

“Yeah?” she asks, glancing up at me for a second, about to look away when I take hold of her chin, making her heart race. She gazes back into my eyes, a hint of vulnerability lingering in those gorgeous sage eyes as she tries to hold my gaze.

“You’re one of the bravest people I know, Red. It’s ok to feel. I may not have known him but he was one lucky fucker to have captured your heart,” I murmur softly, caressing her cheek tenderly with my thumb. “I want you to know that.”

“Elijah-” Not letting her finish, I lean in, pressing my lips against hers.

Iremember how I felt after Aiden’s loss, and the hardest part was how I had to carry on. I couldn’t tell anyone about him because he was human, and Dad and Mama put my broodiness down to hormones. Although at times it was on the tip of my tongue, wanting to scream how I was feeling, wanting to share how I felt but couldn’t. I never could.

Elijah is the first person I’ve told and I don’t even know how I managed that, but now that I have I feel just a little lighter.

His return was what began my healing. I had slowly begun seeing him differently. His sandy brown curls reminded me of the sun, his cerulean eyes of the brightest ocean and his smirk, that sizzling sexy smirk that began to make my stomach feel all funny…

He had been the one to unintentionally heal my broken heart. My feelings for him replaced my thoughts of Aiden. But it also brought me pain too, because I thought he would never return those feelings.

“You’re one of the bravest people I know, Red. It’s ok to feel. I may not have known him but he was one lucky fucker to have captured your heart. I want you to know that,” he says, caressingmy cheek.

“Elijah-”

My heart begins thundering when he leans in and places a deep, tender kiss on my lips. It’s different, not fuelled by lust; his lips are soft, the fresh honeyed taste of his mouth is delicious, his intoxicating scent consumes me.

A surge of emotions runs through me as I kiss him back with equal softness, we’re caressing one another’s lips as if committing it to memory. Each caress… each touch… It’s unexplainable.

He pulls away after a moment and I wished it could last forever.

“You have a thing for forbidden relationships, don’t you?” he says, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. “I mean, first a human, which is not allowed and now your stepbrother…”

“Hey, this was your idea, and aren’t you the one that keeps saying you are not my brother?” I say, even as my heart skips a beat at the way he’s looking at me. “Besides, it’s not a relationship, remember?”

His smirk vanishes and my stomach sinks a little.

Yeah, this isn’t a relationship, it’ll soon be over. But then why did that kiss we just shared feel different? Am I allowing him to cross a line that’s only going to leave me broken?

“You know what I mean, involvements,” he says, getting out of the car. He gets our luggage, easily carrying everything and we both walk into the Inn.

I excuse myself to use the toilets, leaving the luggage with Elijah, who gets us booked in. When I return, he’s holding up a key card between two fingers, the smirk on his face making me narrow my eyes.

“You better not give me that cliché ‘they only had one room available’ shit that only happens in books and movies,” I growl, and Elijah smirks.

“Nope, they had a few, but I booked one. We’re in another town; it’s safer if we stay close,” he states as I cross my arms.

“Aww, I never knew baby Alpha Lijah Wijah needed protection,” I coo, pulling his cheek. He glares at me, tugging free as I snatch the card from him and look at the room number. “You are unbelievable.”

I turn leading the way to the lift with him right behind me.

“You’re the one who would need protecting, Red. Not me,” he mutters with a frown. I snort in return.

“You just needed an excuse,” I state as we step inside the lift. I’m quiet. Although I’m not showing it, I feel a little anxious. Sharing a room with him…

I glance at Elijah, his face is serious, that perfect angled jaw taut as he looks at me moodily. Seems I bruised someone’s alpha ego. I hate how he just looks even hotter right now… that familiar ache in my core returning.

The fact that I am sharing a room with Elijah makes me get a little nervous. I glance at him and a sexy smirk crosses his lips.

“What’s wrong? Not nervous that we’re sharing a room, right?” he whispers mockingly as he leans closer. I push him away, but he refuses to budge.
