I checked and found a full can and brought it out. Spice placed two chairs at a safe distance from the fire. He poured the contents of the can over the pile. Spice then handed me a box of matches.
“Say adios, motherfucker,” Spice teased.
“Adios, motherfucker!” I yelled and threw a lit match. With a whoosh, the fire caught, and flames engulfed the pile. Spice directed me to a chair and went and unwound the garden hose.
“Better safe than sorry. You don’t want to burn the house down,” he said as he joined me in the other chair.
I spotted Mabel peering out of her window. “Take a good look, Mabel. I’m sure you recognised the bed you fucked my ex in!” I yelled.
Spice laughed and produced a beer. “Looked in your fridge. Should have guessed the asshole would drink a pussy brew. As you got the gas, I headed over to mine for supplies.”
Spice handed me the bottle after he’d removed the cap.
“Thanks, Spice, for your help. I don’t think I would have managed myself,” I said, taking a swallow.
The flames reached up high and flickered and danced. There was something mesmerising about them. I bet none of my neighbours would be calling the fire dept.
I was shocked a few minutes later when Austin appeared carrying a crate of beers. He silently handed Spice one and offered me one. I shook my head.
“Ain’t sure if I should thank or curse you, Lindy,” Austin finally admitted.
“Thanking comes to mind,” Spice said on my behalf.
Austin held his gaze. “You knew, too.”
“Ain’t my place to get involved in cheating disputes. Anyway, who would you have believed? Me or the wife?” Spice asked.
“I’d have taken Angela’s word over yours.”
“Exactly. Now think. You’re aware she’s been unfaithful at least once. Who knows if there were more men in your absence? You got a chance to find a decent woman, or you can stay in a toxic marriage knowing that you’ll never trust her again,” Spice pointed out.
“That what you’re telling Lindy?” Austin asked, his eyes narrowing on me.
“Lindy’s the type of woman to search for, dude. Sweet, strong, gorgeous inside and out. Your wife is a total bitch. Sweet to your face and poison behind your back. Ain’t ever going to be happy unless she’s pulling someone down. You want a woman who’ll lift you up and hold her head up high. Pick more carefully next time, and I’m sure you’ll find happiness,” Spice said.
“Taking advice from a biker,” Austin replied with a laugh. “Yet you make more fucking sense than anything else I’ve seen today.”
“Austin, I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you, but I wanted to wipe that smug look off Angela’s lying face. Angela looks down her nose at everyone, and I’m tired of it. She’s nothing but a whore, and you needed to know,” I said, speaking up.
Austin stared at me before laughing loudly. “Lindy, you ain’t wrong. David’s going to be busy pretty soon with the number of divorces he’s going to be named in.”
“That the way you’re thinking?” I asked.
“My marriage was comfortable, not happy, but pleasant. Angela and I haven’t been in love for years. I cared a great deal for her, but today ruined that. I’m going after my kids and kicking her out. The fact Angela slept with the street’s Lothario isn’t going to look good in court. Angela’s packing her bags, and her father’s coming to get her. He thinks this is a storm in a teacup. Lindy, I wanted to enquire if I could borrow David’s book and show him?” Austin said.
“Sorry, Austin, that book is not leaving my greedy grasp. But if you give me a few minutes, I can copy his comments on Angela for you?” I offered.
“That will do,” Austin agreed as I got up, and he took my chair. “You caused a shit storm today, Lindy. Take a friendly warning. There’ll be a target on your back.”
“Then it’s a good job Lindy has someone in her corner,” Spice warned before I spoke.
“Watch her closely because David is the type of guy to lash out,” Austin said, and Spice nodded.
I headed inside to let them talk and copy David’s book. I had a feeling I’d be doing that a lot soon and wondered if I could photocopy it somewhere. That was a damn good idea, I decided and made plans to head to the library tomorrow. David had all sorts of karma heading his way.
