A look of confusion makes its way to the Lieutenant’s face.
“I stopped dealing a long time ago, and I no longer strip for married men, so it seems you’re out of luck.”
“Mmm, I don’t think so.”
I release her, and she adjusts her gun so that it’s pointed at my chest.
Look, I don’t blame her for being cautious. Most soldiers are.

I answer without a single bit of hesitation.
She smiles and puffs out her chest.
“Me? Seriously?”
I nod.
Ezra shakes her head. “Well tough shit then, Motherfucker because I have work to do. None of which includes you.”
“I wouldn’t be so sure of that.”
She rolls her blue eyes before holstering her gun. “Whatever. I don’t have time for this anyway. I’ve gotta job to get to.”
I smile.
So do I.
And I’m looking right at it.

EZRA
“Tell me what happened, Ezra.”
I clasp my hands in front of me, a tear running down my cheek. “No.”
“Ezra—”
“No,” I repeat, this time not bothering to hide my frustration.
The agent sitting across from me nods, his expression a mixture of sympathy and sadness, sprinkled with a bit of pity.
Even he knows just how broken you really are, Ez.
Agent Todd clears his throat before proceeding with his questions.
“What was Joey Odeh like, Lieutenant?”
