“I will and congratulations on . . . everything. Ciao.”
“Bye.” Alex handed the phone back to Suzy. “I miss Cheri.”
“Me too,” Hope and Suzy both said.
Hope shook her head. “This was an incredible day. I mean, a wedding and a baby hours apart. It’s unbelievable.” She fluffed her frizzy hair. “My life has gotten much more interesting all of a sudden.” Grinning, she added, “I’m an auntie.”
“That you are, and so am I.” Alex shifted in her chair. “I feel kind of old now. I love the baby’s name. It’s unique.”
Hope nodded. “I agree. The baby’s name is beautiful and significant at the same time.” She pushed the lime down in her margarita. “We’re real rule breakers today. First, you fake fell inside the hospital—cute nurse, by the way—which leads me to wonder about Tony. You haven’t discussed your cop boyfriend much lately.”
Alex smoothed her dress. “He’s been super busy on some case.” Sighing, she said, “Little Joey is apparently still having a rough time after the divorce, is moody toward Tony, and his nasty, witchy ex doesn’t want me anywhere near her precious son.” She sipped her chardonnay and frowned. “I hate all of his baggage.”
“Maybe he’s not worth it. Remember that pep talk Suzy and I gave you about Tony?”
Alex held up a hand. “Save it. I’m in no mood. Besides, we’ve had enough drama today.”
“Here, here, but what an unbelievable day.” Suzy drained her wine.
“That’s one adjective for it,” Alex said.
After finishing their second drink, Suzy invited them over the following day for leftovers and wedding cake.
“I’ve got to work,” Hope said.
“Ditto,” Alex said.
“Come over afterward if you want. Now, who’s going to drive me home? Ken took my car and I’m spent.”
