Chapter 17

As soon as Alex and Hope were seated at their favorite high-top at Coconuts, Gus appeared. “The usual, ladies?”

“Yes, but we’re just having one nightcap and maybe coffee after that.” Alex didn’t bother looking at their favorite server. Instead, she frowned while reading Cheri’s text.

“What did she say?”

Alex frowned. “In a word, ‘no’.”

“Well? Spill.” Hope accepted a margarita and a bowl of peanuts from Gus.

Alex took a sizable gulp of chardonnay. “I’ll read it.”

Hi! I’m sorry to miss the wedding but I have two huge catering events here in New York City. One is a major celebrity. I’m under contract to keep it quiet but it’s a famous musician. I simply cannot leave. This has to go off without a hitch. How was the rehearsal dinner? Did they enjoy the cuisine? Chef Raj is fab. Miss you girls. ~Cheri

Hope rolled her eyes. “I love Cheri but damn.” She held her hands out to the side, palms up, as if she were Lady Justice. “Let’s see. Cheri’s life or mine. I choose hers.”

“Silly.” Alex peered over her wineglass. “Who wants to be a wealthy socialite in New York City entertaining a famous musician? We’d much rather be spending time with a mouthy Italian broad, wouldn’t we?”

Almost choking on a peanut, Hope said, “You’re right. We have our own show right here. Poor Suzy.”

Scanning the Coconuts crowd, Alex motioned with her head. “I wonder when Mr. Cigar Chomper is going to choke on that damn thing.”

Hope giggled. “He’s a mainstay. I think I’d miss his unlit cigars. I’m glad none of the teachers from Hilltop have discovered this place. They’d love the beachy feel of it. Maybe I should tell them.”

“Don’t you dare tell them about our oasis. It’s getting hard enough to get our regular table.” Scanning the room, Alex said, “I see a new batch of ‘Hello, My Name Is’ conference goers are here.” Glancing toward the suit-wearing crew, Alex did a double take. “Look at Miss Commando in the short, red skirt at the bar.” She covered her eyes. “Oh, God. Wear some freaking underwear. I can’t unsee that.”

“Thanks for the warning.” Hope swiveled her chair away from the bar. “The wedding’s tomorrow. Maybe we should leave early. I’ve had enough to drink.”

“Me too. Let’s go.” Alex left half her chardonnay and hopped off her stool avoiding the direction of the red skirt-wearing offender. She left a twenty on the table for their two drinks. “Suzy will need us at full speed tomorrow. See you then.”
