Eli stood and stretched. “Alert me if there’s trouble.”
David saluted. Turning to the security screens, he studied each of the views, memorizing them so he would recognize a change.
That done, he glanced at his watch and grimaced. He hated to disturb Whitehead, but the situation had changed.
Whitehead answered after two rings.
“It’s David Montgomery, sir. I apologize for calling this late.”
“What happened?”
He explained about Wells’ death and the likelihood that Jordan would insist on protective custody for Gigi and possibly Emma.
“Might be best for both women, David. Having them in separate safe houses divides your resources.”
“No offense, sir, but I don’t trust Jordan with Emma or Gigi’s safety.”
“You want to protect the women yourself.”
“Yes, sir, with help from my brothers. We’re all law enforcement and trained Special Forces operators.”
“Your attention will be split between protection and the search for the Hunt Club teams.”
“We can handle it, sir.” Between the Montgomerys and Wolf Pack, the women were well covered. If Maddox reassigned the Fortress unit, David would reevaluate.
“Are you sure? Failure will be costly for you and the women.”
A truth the director didn’t have to stress. “I’m sure.” He was staking his life and that of the woman he loved on his skills and experience.
“All right. If Agent Jordan tries to take the women into custody, contact me.”
“Thank you, sir. I owe you.”
“No, David. I’m the one who owes you for saving my son’s life more than once when you served on the Teams together. In light of the injuries you suffered to protect him, this is a small enough favor. If you change your mind about utilizing an FBI safe house, call me. Don’t let pride stand in the way of the best protection option for Emma and Gigi.”
Ending the call a moment later, David called his brother Levi.
“Seriously, bro?” his brother groused. “Do you have any idea what time it is?”
“I’m awake. Figured you should be, too.”
Levi groaned. “You’re evil, man. Hang on a second.” A thump sounded over the speaker as his brother dropped the phone without ending the call. Water ran. Seconds later, his brother said, “Go.”
David told him the latest developments.
Levi whistled softly. “Gigi’s a lucky woman. I’m glad she’s okay, but why didn’t they finish the job?”
“I believe having guests in the house held them back. Maybe one of the guests came out of a room or made noise, and the team feared being caught.”
“Makes her a target.”
“We’ll stop them.”
“No other option,” Levi agreed. “What’s the plan?”
“We have one day before Emma insists we use her as bait.”
A groan. “Lousy plan.”
