Blair ended a conversation with one of her officers when David caught her eye. “Observations?”
“Wells’ injuries are similar to the Tuckers’ injuries.”
Her gaze darkened. “Same team?”
“Another team might have used the same method.”
“But you don’t think so.”
He shook his head as he pulled up the photo of Marty and his partner. David turned his screen toward Blair. “Be on the lookout for these men.”
She studied the photo a moment, then said, “Send that to me. Who are they?”
“Martin Grisham and Jerome Burke. Grisham is Wells’ cousin.”
A soft whistle. “Cold.” Once the photo appeared on her phone, Blair inclined her head toward the door. “I want you long gone before Jordan arrives.”
She’d get no argument from him. David doubted he would sleep much tonight, but Wells’ death would complicate an already difficult case. He and Jon returned to the SUV.
Jon cranked the engine. “Where to? Safe house or hospital?”
“Hospital. I want to check on Gigi, and update Cal and Owen.” He gave Jon directions and sent Emma a text.
Minutes later, Jon parked in the lot in front of Archer Hospital. Since David was a frequent visitor because of his job, the nurse at the desk buzzed him into the ER without questions. Cal stood watch outside one of the exam rooms.
“Any news?” Jon asked his friend.
“Not yet. Owen’s inside with Gigi and the doctor.” He lowered his voice. “Sit rep.”
David updated him, making a mental note to do the same with Blackhawk, Whitehead, and Maddox by email. No need to wake them. His brothers, however, would expect a call.
Cal frowned. “What about Gigi? We can’t leave her without protection. She’s a target now.”
“If the feds close the B & B while they investigate, Owen will want her with him at the ranch.”
Minutes later, the exam room door opened, and Dr. Stringer walked out. He greeted David with a nod.
“How is Gigi, Doc?”
“Mild concussion, a headache, and a few bruises. She’ll recover quickly.”
“Are you keeping her for observation?”
“Since Owen assured me that he or another member of your family would watch over her for the next 24 hours, I’m releasing her.”
“We’ll take good care of her.”
After a quick rundown of symptoms to be on the lookout for, Dr. Stringer walked into the next exam room.
“Gigi was lucky,” Jon said.
Cal folded his arms. “We need to identify and locate the Hunt Club teams, fast. Based on what she told Owen, Gigi can’t keep her business closed long, and she won’t understand the necessity. She saw less than Emma did when she was attacked.”
“The teams don’t like loose ends. They’ll come for her.” David’s gut churned. Instead of one witness to protect, he had two.
When Jordan interviewed Gigi, he’d want to place her in protective custody. Owen wouldn’t allow her out of his sight, not after the agent’s track record with Emma.
David sighed. Looked as though he’d be calling Whitehead. Otherwise, his brother would be arrested and detained, leaving Gigi at the mercy of Craig Jordan.
