“Is Grisham the mastermind of the game?”

“I don’t know.”

David’s eyebrow rose.

“I don’t,” Wells insisted. “He could be the mastermind or just one of the players. The only reason I knew Marty was involved in the Hunt Club was because of the security cam photo.” He frowned. “Some of those photos are out of our case files. Did Jordan give you a copy of them?”

“Show me your forearms.”

“You can’t be serious.”

Jon clamped a hand on his shoulder.

A second later, blood drained from Wells’ face. He moaned.

“Do as the man asked,” the sniper murmured. “His woman’s life is at stake.”

When the agent gave a slight nod, Jon released him. Wells shuddered with relief. “You’re lethal, man,” he muttered.

“So they tell me.”

The agent unbuttoned his shirt sleeves and rolled them up. He turned his arms over so the men could see that his skin was unmarked by a tattoo. “Satisfied?”

“Not even close. Who’s your cousin’s partner?”

Wells remained mute.

David waited 30 seconds, then headed for the door. “You’ll be hearing from Whitehead soon.”

“Wait.”

He paused at the doorjamb.

“You can’t tell Jordan I talked to you. He’ll force me to return to D.C. and block me from having access to any part of this investigation.”

“Name.”

A sigh. “Jerome Burke. He attended the same college as Marty.”

“Are they behind bars?”

“I wish.”

David spun on his heel. “Why not? If Marty and his partner remain loose, they’re a threat to Emma.”

“It wasn’t my call, all right?”

“Jordan is allowing two known killers to roam free?”

“I told you the Grishams are a powerhouse. They know people with clout in the Justice Department.”

A river of ice water flooded his veins. “Your cousin worked out a deal.”

A nod. “If he and Jerome testify in court, they walk.”

For a split second, David saw red. “They murdered Emma’s family.”

“I know. I’m sorry. The Justice Department wants the Hunt Club shut down. Marty and Jerome are the only two members we’ve been able to identify. Jordan saw the resemblance between me and Marty, and showed me the photo. I identified them and asked Jordan to allow me to work with him on the case. I feel responsible since Marty and I were the ones who created that stupid game. I want the chance to help shut down the Hunt Club.”
