“It’s that obvious?”
The other man lifted one shoulder. “Want to talk or should I mind my own business?”
David motioned toward the chairs at the far end of the deck. He’d share the information with the others soon.
“Talk to me,” Rafe said as he sat and set his bag beside the chair.
“Just got off the phone with Jordan.”
“Bet that was unpleasant. The dude’s a jerk.”
“I confronted him about information he didn’t share.”
A snort. “What else is new? Jordan has a rep at the Bureau for holding information close to the vest.”
“This information is a game changer in how we protect Emma.” David rubbed his jaw. “Jordan neglected to tell us Emma has a crew of men stalking her.”
Rafe stared. “Who are they?”
“He says he doesn’t know, but they’re part of a group called the Hunt Club.”
The former agent surged to his feet and stalked to the deck railing. Rafe gripped the wood hard enough that his knuckles turned white, the muscles in his arms bunching. After several minutes of silence while the operative pulled himself together, he turned back to David. Eyes glittering with fury, he said, “Details?”
“You know this group.”
“You could say that. They murdered the woman I planned to marry three years ago.”
Oh, man. “I’m sorry for your loss, Rafe.”
The operative gave a short nod. “Now you understand why I will do anything necessary to protect Emma.” His eyes darkened. “No one should have to experience that loss.”
“Did you investigate her death?”
“Not officially. My supervisor said I couldn’t be objective.”
“But you did nose around.”
A slight curve of Rafe’s lips. “Of course.”
“Come inside. We’ll brief everyone at one time.”
The other man grimaced.
“They don’t know about your girlfriend?” David asked.
“No.” He sighed. “Let’s go. Protecting Emma will be worth the pain of talking about Callie.” Rafe snagged his bag and led the way into the cabin.
Cal’s eyebrow rose at the sight of his teammate. “That was fast. You finished checking the perimeter already?”
David held up his hand to hold off more questions. He turned to Eli. “Can Jackson join the discussion without compromising our security?”
Jon said, “I’ll monitor the security cams from here.” He indicated his laptop.
Cal left the room and returned with Jackson.
“What’s going on?” the medic asked as he sat across from Emma.
“I spoke with Special Agent Jordan,” David said. “At first, he denied knowing about the men searching for Emma. After a hard push, Jordan finally admitted the letters HC stand for Hunt Club.”
