“Trouble with a capital T.”

“David, send me Zane’s email. I’ll print the files, and we’ll get started.” Jon sent him a pointed glance. “Sounds like you have a call to make.”

Yeah, he did. “Have you searched Anne’s social media pages?”

“My priority was the safe house photos. The social media pages are my next project.”

“I need it yesterday.”

“Understood.”

David kissed Emma lightly and stood. “I’ll be back in a few minutes.” He looked at Eli who gave him a slight nod. Knowing his bride-to-be would be well protected, David walked outside to the deck. As he shut the door behind him, he heard Eli ask Emma to show him her book of sock patterns.

David grabbed his phone and strode to the railing. He checked his emails and saw what he’d expected to see from Jordan. Nothing. The special agent wanted to play hardball? Fine. David relished a good game.

Seconds later, his call was answered. “Yeah, Jordan.” The special agent’s voice sounded surly and clipped.

“This is Montgomery. We need to talk.”

“So, talk. I’m busy.”

“Where’s my file on the threat delivered to the Rocking M?”

“This is my case. I have more important things to do than cater to your curiosity, Montgomery. How’s my witness?”

“Safe, no thanks to you. You have until 8:00 a.m. to send me the information I asked for, or I’ll contact Whitehead.”

Jordan hissed out a breath. “Look, I told you I might not have all the results back as soon as you wanted them. I don’t. The lab’s backed up.”

“Then pressure the lab to send the results.”

“If the only reason for this call is to threaten me, you’ve accomplished your goal. I have to go. Unlike you, I have real work to do.”

“Hold it, Jordan.”

A muttered curse. “What else?”

“You have a serious problem.”

“I have several, and you’re at the top of my list.”

“When were you going to tell me that Emma has a crew of men hunting her?”

CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

Satisfaction filled David at the silence from Special Agent Craig Jordan. Guess the agent hadn’t expected a country bumpkin sheriff to uncover information pointing to a group of men hunting Emma.

David didn’t understand why the men wanted to kill her. Was Jordan’s assumption that the group wanted to finish what they started correct?

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the FBI agent said finally.

“Don’t lie to me, Jordan. I’m not in the mood.”

After a muttered curse, “How did you find out?”

David’s hand clenched around his phone. If Jordan stood in front of him, David would punch him. “You should have told me the truth. By holding back, you endangered Emma.”

“The more people who know, the greater the risk for a leak.”
