“Everything remained quiet. You?”

“Nothing yet.”

“It’s coming.”

“We’ll be ready. Who’s on duty today?”

“Levi and I are working until 2:00, then Caleb will take over with a couple of part-timers until 10:00 tonight. Elliot and I will work the overnight shift with Rafe and Cal.”

Excellent. “We’ll reevaluate tomorrow morning. In the meantime, I’ll do what I can from here.”

“How’s Emma?”

She leaned her head against David’s shoulder. “I’m fine, Owen. Your brother is taking great care of me.”

“You let me know if he slacks off. I’ll yank him back in line.”

David snorted. “Thanks for the vote of confidence, bro.”

Owen chuckled. “You bet. If anything happens, we better hear about it.”

“Same.” After ending the call with his brother, David called Zane Murphy.

“Yeah, Murphy.”

“It’s David Montgomery. You’re on speaker with Emma.”

“Good morning, Emma. I trust you’re well.”

“If you don’t count a deranged serial killer scouring Tennessee looking for me, I’m great.”

“Don’t worry. We’ll find him. What can I do for you, David?”

“Have an update for me?”

“I just sent you a packet of information two minutes ago.”

He straightened. “Find anything?”

“Plenty. Our least-favorite fed has been holding back.”

David growled. “Can’t say that surprises me. Give me the highlights.”

“Jordan and his buddies have been chasing their tails for months with the Butcher. The Tuckers aren’t the first or last victims of this guy.”

“How many people has he killed?” Emma asked.

“Fifteen so far, but the murder of your family is different.”

David frowned. “How?”

“The rest of the victims have been individuals. That was the first time the Butcher had attacked a family.”

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

David scowled. “A serial killer doesn’t generally change his MO once he has it nailed down. Any speculation as to why he changed tactics?” he asked Zane.

“Best guess is he didn’t realize the family was at home.”
