Three hours later, he woke to a tap on the suite door. David’s weapon was in his hand a second later and pointed at the door.
“It’s Eli,” Wolf Pack’s leader said through the door. “I’m coming in soft.”
“Come ahead.” He held his aim steady, lowering his weapon when Eli walked into the suite alone. “Sit rep.”
“Company.” Eli inclined his head toward Emma. “She should be in the safe room while my team hunts.”
“My brothers?”
“Awake and ready.”
“One minute.”
With a nod, Eli left.
Emma stirred. “What’s wrong, David?”
“You need to go to the safe room.”
She sat up. “Why?”
“Company. Put on your shoes.”
Emma tossed the blanket aside, shoved her feet into her running shoes, and stood. “Ready.”
David dropped a quick kiss on her mouth, anxious to assess the situation for himself. “Let’s go.”
At the suite door, he held up his hand for her to wait while he confirmed the corridor was clear of threats, then reached back and grasped Emma’s hand.
They hurried toward the stairs. On the first floor, David led her to the library. Tugging on the designated book in the bookcase, he shifted the bookcase to reveal a door leading to the safe room. After typing in the appropriate codes, he nudged Emma inside the room where Mrs. Grady waited.
Emma hugged the housekeeper. “I’m glad you’re here, too.”
She patted Emma’s back. “The Montgomery boys wouldn’t leave me outside this room with danger looming. After what happened two months ago, they insisted I stay in here with you.”
“I’m glad to have your company.” Emma turned to David. “What do you want us to do?”
“Stay here, no matter what.” He motioned toward the bank of screens connected to the security cameras around the property and ranch house. “You can observe what’s happening from here. Stay where I know you’re safe. Otherwise, my attention will be divided.”
“Go. Mrs. G and I will be fine.” Emma brushed a soft kiss over his mouth. “Be safe.” She stepped back.
Although reluctant to go, David secured the door and returned the bookcase to its original position. He hurried to the security room where Levi and Elliot monitored the screens. “Any news?”
Elliot handed him a comm device.
Satisfaction filled him. Now, he’d be able to monitor events occurring on the ground. David slipped the communication device into his ear, hearing whispered communications between the members of the black ops team.
Levi inclined his head toward the camera feeds on the west side of the ranch. “Wolf Pack is closing in on the target.”
David scanned the camera feeds in the relevant areas. “Where is he?”
“Not showing up on the monitors at the moment. Our visitor is avoiding the cameras.”
His jaw tightened. This guy had explored the Rocking M in the daytime, but couldn’t avoid all the cameras at night. Too dark. “He’s been on our land before tonight.”
“Yep.”
Elliot glanced at David. “How did we miss him?”
