“I do trust you, but don’t destroy your law enforcement career to stand against Agent Jordan. There’s animosity between you two.”

Understatement, that. “That won’t end soon. Our focus is on catching the Butcher instead of catering to Jordan.” David wanted Emma safe, no matter what path that took.

“How long before the FBI arrives?”

“Depends on whether Jordan follows the posted speed limit. Ninety minutes or less.”

“Will he come alone?”

“Not a chance. Jordan always travels with at least one other agent.” David searched his contact list and called the man he hadn’t expected to talk to this soon.

A moment later, a deep voice said, “Maddox.”

“It’s David Montgomery, sir.”

A slight pause. “Changed your mind about working for me?”

Emma’s eyes widened.

David stroked her hair. “You’re on speaker. I haven’t made a decision yet.”

“I’ll wear you down. I need you and your brothers, and I’ll make it worth your while. You have skills Fortress needs. We could call you the M team.”

David chuckled. “Nice. I’ll keep that in mind.”

“What do you need, David?”

“Tech help.”

“Talk to me.”

He summarized what he needed and why. “Would one of your techs have time to conduct an online search?”

“I’ll have someone contact you soon. Anything else?”

Although he hated to ask, David swallowed his pride and requested the help he needed to take care of his woman. “I need help protecting Emma. My brothers will back me up, but the citizens of Morgan County count on us to protect them, too. I can’t leave them without enough law enforcement coverage. We can juggle job responsibilities and Emma’s protection detail, but aside from my brothers, the deputies aren’t trained to deal with a serial killer.”

“I understand. Expect a Fortress team soon.”

Tension leached from his muscles. Maddox never broke a promise. “Thanks. I only need two operatives to relieve so I can sleep or cover a work shift.”

“A team will contact you soon. Anything else?”

“No, sir. Thanks for the assistance.”

“I still owe you for your help two months ago, and I pay my debts. Think about working for me part-time. I’ll work it so your team is deployed a few days a month.”

David’s mouth curved. “Yes, sir.”

“I expect an answer after you take down your man. Later.” Maddox ended the call.

“Who is Maddox?” Emma asked.

“Brent Maddox is the CEO of Fortress Security, an elite black ops firm specializing in hostage rescue and counter-terrorism. Fortress also has a bodyguard training school, and sells and installs security systems.”

Emma frowned. “I’ve never heard of it.”

“Not surprising. They don’t advertise.”
