Maddox growled. “You are expendable, Wolfe. Don’t forget that. I have dozens of men willing and able to take your place at a moment’s notice. So, keep your hands and kisses to yourself if you want to live.”
Eli laughed at the threats from his boss.
“David?”
“Yes, sir?”
“Thought any more about my offer?”
He smiled. Should have figured that Maddox would revisit the topic at the first opportunity. “I have. I don’t have an answer yet.” Although he could guess what his brothers would say. They, like him, were restless. “I haven’t had time to consult with my brothers.”
“Get on it. I need you.”
“Yes, sir.”
“If anything flares up, call me. Day or night.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Maddox ended the call.
A smile curved Eli’s mouth. “The boss is recruiting you and your brothers.”
“He says he’ll call us the M team.”
The operative rolled his eyes. “And people say Wolf Pack is a lame name.”
“At least our name isn’t associated with a college sports team.”
Eli narrowed his eyes as he grabbed his phone again to make another call. “Don’t knock it, buddy. After all, we might be called to back you up one day soon.”
David sobered. True enough.
A moment later, Eli’s call was answered by a woman. “Armstrong.”
“It’s Eli, sugar. Can you talk?”
“I have five minutes before I arrive at a crime scene. Talk fast.”
“First, you’re on speaker with David Montgomery, Sheriff of Morgan County.” Eli laid out what was going on in short, concise sentences.
A soft whistle from the lady. “Your girlfriend was lucky to escape that many times, David. What do you need?”
“Names of FBI agents who can’t be bought.” Her list along with the one from Whitehead and Rafe should give them a solid group of trustworthy agents.
“I’ll talk to Deke, and we’ll send Eli a list. With Zane’s encryption, no one will intercept the information or trace it from Fortress to you.”
“I appreciate the help.”
“No problem. Let me know if I can do anything else.”
Eli chuckled. “We might need to borrow your husband.”
“You planning to blow something up?” Stella teased.
“Maybe.”
“He loves keeping his hand in that part of the business. Later, guys.” She ended the call.
