Taking Emma to Bear Lake Cabins might be a costly mistake. Hopefully, she wouldn’t pay the price for his inability to tell the woman he loved no. “Don’t make me regret this,” he muttered.

“Yes, sir.”

He snorted. “Smart aleck.” David threaded his fingers through hers and escorted her to the kitchen where Eli waited.

“Who won?”

He glared at Wolf Pack’s leader. “Who do you think?”

Eli grinned. “That’s what I figured. Have to love strong women.”

Emma Tucker was as strong as steel.

“We’re taking my SUV,” Eli continued. “The vehicle is reinforced and has bullet-resistant glass.”

“What about your teammates?” Emma asked.

“Cal will ride with us. Jon’s remaining here to continue his search for photos of the killers. Jackson takes over the watch in a few minutes. Rafe is preparing a few surprises in case we have unwanted company.” He turned to David. “Ready?”

“As soon as I make one phone call.” He wanted backup at Bear Lake Cabins. He trusted Eli and Cal. He trusted his brothers more. “I’ll return in a minute.” He stepped outside and called Elliot.

His brother answered on the first ring. “Everything okay?”

“I need backup.”

“When and where?”

“Bear Lake Cabins in twenty minutes. I’ll have Emma and two members of Wolf Pack.”

“Why are you bringing Em?”

He snorted. “Wait until you have a woman of your own. You’ll understand.”

“Won’t happen on my watch.”

“You say that now. I’ll be the first one to laugh in your face when you fall hard.”

“Why are you going to the cabins?”

“To pick up supplies for Emma. I don’t want to hear it,” he said over his brother’s protests. “Just say you’ll back me up.”

“Of course we will.”

“Only two of you. I don’t want to pull the others off shift.”

“See you soon.” Elliot ended the call.

David slid his phone away, sure his brothers would tear a strip off his hide for taking chances with Emma’s safety. He was already second guessing his decision.

Although he wanted to lock Emma inside a fortress for her own safety, David couldn’t do that to her. Her reaction to darkness and difficulty eating all added up to untreated PTSD, another black mark against the FBI. They should have insisted on counseling for Emma.

The door to the deck opened. “Time to go,” Eli said.

He nodded. The sooner they picked up Emma’s knitting supplies and returned, the better for his peace of mind.

“I’ll drive the SUV to the deck stairs.”

David returned to the kitchen to find Emma and Cal waiting for him.
