Emma shook her head, her heart overflowing with love for this amazing man. “I love the ring. It’s perfect.”

“How soon can I convince you to marry me?”

“I don’t want to wait, either.”

“As soon as we run the Hunt Club to ground?”

“Depends. How soon will that happen?”

“Hopefully, tonight. Tomorrow night, at the latest.”

Emma’s eyes widened. “Are you serious?”

David smiled. “It’s a good thing Jon and Zane work for the good guys.”

“What about Agent Jordan? He thinks he’s part of your plan.”

“He is. Jordan is going the slower legal route. He got the names of the other hunters from Marty. While he learns more details and handles the red tape, my brothers and I will partner with Fortress. By tomorrow night, our local law enforcement partners and the FBI will receive anonymous phone calls about the locations of the detained Hunt Club members.” He brushed her mouth with his. “So, Emma, how soon will you make me the happiest man on the planet?”

“What’s on your schedule for Saturday morning?”

His eyes gleamed with heat. “Nothing is more important than marrying you. You’re sure, baby?”

“No doubts.”

“Guess it’s a good thing I also bought the wedding bands this morning, too.”

She grinned. “I guess it is. How soon will you and the others leave?”

“Two hours. Think you can be ready by then?”

Emma blinked. “I’m going with you?”

“We’re driving to Nashville to meet at Fortress headquarters with the operatives. Maddox has arranged for an operative to watch over you while my brothers and I are gone.”

“You’re still worried about my safety.”

“That, and I’m concerned Agent Jordan might whisk you off into protective custody while I’m gone.”

Returning to FBI protective custody wasn’t high on her list of things to do. “Excellent points. I’ll be ready.”

David stood and held out his hand to Emma.

Hopefully, this nightmare would end soon, and she and David would be able to start their life together with the darkness behind them.

CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Emma’s hands clutched the end of the seat in the waiting area of John C. Tune Airport as she watched the night sky for the telltale lights of the last Fortress jet. She wasn’t surprised that David was with one of the last teams to return to Nashville. He, Elliot, and Levi had left the city two days ago with Ethan Blackhawk to track down one of the teams hunting in the desert outside Las Vegas. Since the area was remote and well-known to Ethan, Brent Maddox had requested his help.

Caleb patted her shoulder. “Shouldn’t be long now.”

“You said that an hour ago.”

“Chill, Em,” Owen said, his tone mild. He and his brother had landed two hours earlier after the successful capture of their assigned team of hunters. They had been sent out with two members of the Texas unit. “If there was a problem, we’d know by now.”

Not necessarily. Something in David’s voice worried her. Before she could ask what was wrong, he’d had to board the plane.

Three hours and counting. Unable to sit still, Emma paced the length of the private waiting area reserved for Fortress operatives and their families.
