“I’m surprised, but I did. Did you rest?”
Matt captured her lips for a leisurely kiss before answering. “I feel great this morning. Turns out I need to hold a certain gorgeous woman to keep nightmares and flashbacks at bay. Thank you for letting me hold you.”
Delilah marveled at his ability to turn something that benefited her into a favor for himself. She glanced around. “Where’s Cade?”
“With Sasha. I took over the watch two hours ago. Cade will sleep another two hours. Hungry?”
Her stomach lurched. “Not really.”
“What do you normally eat in the mornings?”
“A banana. Sometimes an egg.”
“Go get ready. I’ll call in an order. By the time you’re finished, the food should be here.”
She started toward her bedroom. At the doorway, she paused and twisted. “Thanks for holding me, Matt.” Delilah hurried inside and closed the door before he replied.
As she showered and dressed, Delilah considered the tasks she had ahead of her today. A trip to the bank followed by a visit to her mother’s lawyer. She should call to set an appointment with Oliver Shannon.
Delilah remembered again her mother’s odd statement about not trusting Zach and Randy to handle her estate. Maybe Michelle had a few personal items to give friends.
A few more hours and she’d have the answers to her questions. After dragging a brush through her hair, she tied her tennis shoes and left the bedroom.
Matt turned from the French door, coffee mug in hand. “You look good enough to nibble on.”
Wow. Charmer, indeed. “Thanks. Do you have more packets of tea?”
He inclined his head toward the kitchen counter. “I made your tea while you were in the shower. Should be ready now.”
“You’re one in a million.”
A chuckle as he turned back to the window. “I hope you still say that when I do something stupid and tick you off.”
“You’re sure you’ll need to get back in my good graces?”
“I’m human. I’ll screw up at some point. I hope you’re in a forgiving mood when I do.”
Delilah sipped her tea and sighed. Perfect. “Don’t worry. I don’t hold grudges. Is it safe to sit on the balcony?”
“I haven’t seen anything suspicious. It’s a beautiful morning. Do you want your banana? Breakfast arrived a few minutes ago.”
She selected one of four bananas on the tray and joined Matt on the balcony’s outdoor couch. They sat in silence until their mugs were empty and her banana eaten.
Matt glanced at Delilah. “What do you need to do today?”
“Go to the bank to check my mother’s safe deposit box.”
“Wouldn’t your stepfather do that?”
“He can’t. Only Mom and I have keys and she kept hers hidden.”
“What’s in the box?”
“Her will. I don’t know what else might be in there. I also need to call Oliver Shannon and set an appointment.”
Matt glanced at his watch. “The bank won’t open for another hour.”
“Neither will the law office. I should call Piper.”
