“I’m getting tired of waiting for you, Evan,” a petulant female voice called from down the hall. “Hurry up.”
“Shut up,” Evan yelled. He turned back to Delilah and Matt. “I gotta go.”
“We’ll see ourselves out.” Matt cupped Delilah’s elbow and escorted her from the house.
As they drove away from Evan’s home, she twisted to look at the medic. “Wonder how long the redhead will stick around when she figures out the waterfall of money is gone.”
“Couldn’t say.”
“She was beautiful.”
The corner of his lips tugging upward. “Was she? I didn’t notice.”
“How could you not? She propositioned you.”
“She propositioned us. I didn’t pay attention to her looks because I’m only interested in you. Aside from assessing other women as potential threats to your safety, they don’t matter to me. No woman has caught my attention since the moment I saw you, Delilah.”
Delilah’s eyes stung. Good grief. Matt Rainer was a keeper.
“Your cousin, Shane, lives outside of town. According to Zane, he bought a cabin twenty miles away in the middle of a 200-acre wooded area. From the aerial pictures, the place is beautiful.”
“He’s a serious hunter.”
“The woods will have plentiful game.” His cell phone rang. Matt activated his Bluetooth. “Rainer.”
“Matt, it’s Kira. We need to talk.”
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
Matt’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. He knew that tone in Kira’s voice. Trouble. “You’re on speaker with Delilah Frost. Delilah, this is Kira Brody, the forensic accountant I asked to look into your mother’s accounts.” After the women greeted each other, he asked, “What did you find, Kira?”
“Oddities in Michelle Holloway’s accounts being administered through Oliver Shannon’s office. By the way, you didn’t make a good impression on the lawyer. He gave me what I needed with great reluctance and many threats. Needless to say, he’s not a fan of yours.”
“I’m not surprised.” Didn’t hurt his feelings, especially since his precaution paid off. Matt hadn’t expected to find issues with the accounts. Now that he had, he would pursue the lead.
She laughed. “And you’re not bothered by it, either.”
“Nope.”
“What kind of oddities?” Delilah asked.
“Someone has been skimming money out of the accounts almost from the beginning. I have to report my findings to the authorities, Matt.”
“Do it. The sooner, the better.” Matt reached for Delilah’s hand. “Do you know how much has been taken, Kira?”
“Five million and change. Considering how much Mrs. Holloway was worth, no one would have noticed if you hadn’t asked for the audit.”
“Can you trace where the money went?” Delilah asked.
“The initial deposits went to the Essex Corporation in an offshore account. It’s a shell corporation with ties to the Cayman Islands. From there the money was routed all over the world into multiple holding companies and then transferred to a Swiss bank account. That’s as far as I’ll be able to track it. Zane might be able to do something further, but I can’t guarantee that.”
“Anything else?” Matt asked.
“Not right now. I’ll keep digging, but I thought you’d like to know what I have so far.”
“Great job, Kira. I owe you one.”
She laughed. “Yes, you do, and I intend to collect.”
