“Need privacy for that?”
She shook her head and pulled the cell phone from her pocket. After four rings, her assistant picked up.
“I don’t know who this is, but do you have any idea what time it is?” Piper groused.
“It’s Delilah. I have a new number. I apologize for calling so early.”
Muffled thuds and covers rustling. “Sorry, Delilah. I’m not a morning person.”
“Could have fooled me. You’re always cheerful.”
“That’s because by the time I arrive at Wicks, I’ve consumed a full pot of coffee. Caffeine does wonders for my attitude and mental clarity.”
Delilah laughed. “I guess I need to buy a coffee maker for the break room at the shop.”
“You just made my day. Thanks, boss. Now, why did you call me at this ungodly hour of the morning?”
“I’ll be out of town longer than I anticipated. Can you handle the shop alone?”
“Sure. What happened?”
Delilah explained about the loss of her mother and her new responsibility. “If you have trouble or anything makes you uneasy, contact Liam McCoy, Matt’s teammate.”
“That’s not a hardship. Liam is a hottie. How long do you think you’ll be gone?”
Delilah grinned at hearing her assistant’s assessment of Liam. Looked like the operative wouldn’t have much trouble convincing Piper to go out with him. “I’m not sure. I don’t know what’s involved in settling Mom’s estate. I won’t be here longer than necessary.” Being in Harmony brought back painful memories.
“No rush. I’ll be fine. I’m sorry about your mother, Delilah.”
Her eyes burned. “Thanks.” After a few minutes discussing shop supplies and orders, Delilah ended the call. She leaned her head against Matt’s shoulder. “Can we stay out here for a while?” Watching the water drift past the hotel and pedestrians wander along the walkway beside the river was peaceful. She couldn’t do anything proactive for another hour. She’d like to enjoy just being with Matt until Cade and Sasha made an appearance.
“Sure. I need to check the files Zane sent me before we leave the hotel. I’ll read them after I shower.”
An hour later, the door to the second bedroom opened.
Matt stood and held out his hand to Delilah. “I don’t want you out here alone in case of trouble. Call the lawyer’s office and set an appointment while I shower. After I finish reading Z’s files, we’ll go to the bank.”
Delilah followed the medic into the suite, mentally gearing herself up for a long and difficult day.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
While Matt’s computer booted up, he poured himself another mug of coffee. “What did you find out from Shannon?” he asked Delilah.
“We have an appointment at 11:00 this morning. That should give me enough time to empty out the safe deposit box and see what Mom wanted me to take care of for her.”
“Give me a few minutes and I’ll be ready to go.”
Delilah glanced at the computer. “What if the files Zane sent are large?”
“If we need to leave, I’ll finish reviewing the files later.” He set down his coffee mug and studied her face. “You need more tea?”
“How did you know?”
He winked at her. “A beautiful, but very pale face. Have a seat and I’ll fix you another cup.”
“Do you mind if I read the files with you?”
“You may see things you won’t like.”
