The big brown Wolf looked at her with sad eyes and whined, a pitiful sound that moved her to grab the cell phone she had in her pocket.
“What were you thinking coming here alone?” Alex hissed, grabbing her waist and pulling her against him, “Don’t move,” he snarled at the pup who whimpered, but stayed down.
“Shh,” Maggie said, but snuggled him closer as she spoke into the phone, “Hi, this is Maggie Flint. I caught one of yours trying to bust into my office. Yes, he is okay. Young. A little frightened. I don’t know his name, but he needs help. Thank you, Alpha.”
“Maggie,” Alex nuzzled her neck.
He kissed her mating mark, and immediately the touch had her thinking all manner of naughty things. But first things first. She turned in his arms to face the young Wolf.
“Can you Change back?”
“Don’t try anything, pup. My Tiger is still hungry,” growled Alex, and she elbowed him.
The Wolf whined again, but after a few painfully long minutes, he was able to Shift back to human form. Maggie ran upstairs and got both the boy and Alex some clothes. She turned her back while the kid shrugged them on.
“Well?”
“You, you two know about me? What I am?” he asked, surprised.
“Of course, you are a Wolf Shifter. Haven’t you been introduced to the Pack?”
“What’s a Pack?”
Maggie looked at Alex. His lips were closed and jaw tight. She turned back to the kid.
“What is your name?”
“I’m Marco,” he mumbled, “I’m from Newark, but my stepdad kicked me out when this happened a few weeks ago. If you know what this is, can you, I mean, can you help me?”
“You don’t know anything about what you are?” she asked, sympathy flowing through her when he shook his head.
“Nah. My stepdad said I was possessed,” he shrugged, but she could see the hurt in his eyes.
“You aren’t possessed,” Alex growled, cutting off the sound when she raised her eyebrows, “look your stepdad is probably just a human. Didn’t your mom tell you anything?”
“She died,” he shook his head.
“I am so sorry, Marco.”
“Me too,” Alex nodded, then he turned to Maggie, “I think we found our cat burglar.”
“I’m sorry man,” the teen bowed his head.
It was obvious he was ashamed, but stealing was wrong. Regardless of why.
“I had no other choice. I had to eat, you know,” he shrugged, “but I will pay it all back. I swear.”
“You will,” Maggie said nodding, “First you are going to learn about what you are and how to control it.”
She nodded to the newcomer and smiled in welcome. Tate Nighthawk, the huge, dark-haired Werewolf, strolled up to them in an open and friendly manner.
“You must be why I am here,” Tate nodded at Maggie and Alex, then pursed his lips at the teenager.
“Yes, this is Marco. He needs your help,” Maggie said.
She saw Marco tense and wanted to ease his discomfort. So, she looked at Alex for support, and as she’d come to expect, the sapphire-eyed man nodded at her.
“Marco, go with Tate. He can help you, but I expect you to report back here for work May 26th, got it?”
