“Fuck no you’re not, get over here.”
Well, if she insists. I slot myself beside her and wrap my arm around her waist, pulling her close. Having her tucked into my side makes my dick jump. Her fleshy hip has my fingers tingling with the need to grab on and never let her go again.
I smile for the picture and she’s gone from underneath me, running over to ensure the perfect shot was taken.
“Okay! Let's take pictures at this cutout!” She points to the two pumpkin bodies painted on thick plywood. Whoever sticks their face through will look like they have an orange body with scrawny arms and legs.
“Callum, come take this picture with me.” I look around and point to myself, unsure if I really heard her right. “Yes, you! Come on, it'll be fun!” Well, if she wants it, I guess she gets it.
I step behind the cutout and smile as more shots are taken before we trade places with Johnathan and Daphne. They take their picture and two more from our group step up. It’s a rotating carousel of people until everyone has had their chance. We move to the next one, a dog dressed up as a clown and cat dressed up like a unicorn, and pose for that, too. We all laugh at one another and make funny faces, all in good spirit.
The sun has started to go down and everyone has gathered around the big fire pit in the middle of the field. It’s tradition that patrons all huddle around to watch them light it, which they do as the sun falls behind the trees. Typically, once that’s over, the families file out, and that’s when the adult fun starts. The booze comes out and the DJ cranks up the music.
“Okay, is everyone ready to light this thing up?” The announcer calls through the microphone. “Count down with me: five…”
“Five,” we all repeat.
“Four, three, two, one!” A large torch is tossed into the middle of the pit and all of the wood goes up in flames. Ooo’s and awe’s fill the nighttime air as the timber cracks and pops under the heat. An ember cracks up into the night sky, causing a reflection to be seen out of my peripheral vision. I turn my head to look further, and it’s a mirror attached to a tree. There’s an employee standing behind a rope.
“Hey, what’s that?” I ask Jonathan, pointing towards the tree line.
“Oh, they do a mirror maze now. Instead of it being in a fun house, like in a circus, it’s out in the woods. They give you a map and everything, it’s hard to complete and takes a while. It’s pretty spread out.”
"Interesting."
I think I have an idea.
Chapter 5
Hazel
The night air is crisp, causing goosebumps to break out across my skin. I rub my arms, trying to warm up as we all sit around the fire. The licks of warmth we get is nice, but it’s not quite enough. I’m sandwiched between Daphne and Callum, although Daphne isn’t giving me the time of day right now. She’s too busy schmoozing it up with Johnathan, not that I blame her. If I had a boyfriend, I’d be doing the same thing.
Callum gets up and starts to walk away, and I automatically miss his body being next to mine. I’m not sure if it’s muscle memory that makes me want to keep him next to me or the heat he was radiating against my outer thigh.
We’re all sipping on spiked apple cider, it is warming my body from the inside out. I take another sip before I’m clouded with a shadow lingering over me. I look up and am met with a blanket being held out to me. I grab it from the hand reaching out, revealing Callum standing behind it. I smile up at him as he sits down next to me. I lay the blanket out over both of our laps, letting my thigh rest against his. I tell myself it’s because I’m greedy for warmth, but I really feel like it’s because his presence is still comforting to me. My head automatically wants to rest itself against his shoulder, but I won’t allow it. There’s too much water under the bridge, right?
There is a dance floor on the other side of the fire, bodies moving to the beat and others just moving to their own drum.
I look over my shoulder at the mirror maze, I’m interested, but I’m too scared to go through by myself. There haven’t been a lot of people going that way in general, I would hate to be stuck in there alone. What if I got lost?
“Are you going to go?” He asks me. He gives my shoulder a nudge with his own, causing me to rock back and forth.
“I was thinking about it, but I don’t want to go by myself and get lost. My luck, I’d end up turned around and in another state.”
“I’ll go with you.”
“Yo- you would?”
“Yeah, we used to have so much fun in these types of things,” he leads with a wink. My face flushes and I’m sure it’s because of the fire, right?
“Okay. Let’s go then.” I stand up and he takes my wrist in his tight grip, pulling me behind him, making me jog slightly. I’m glad I picked combat boots instead of something more difficult to wear tonight. He looks over his shoulder, making sure I’m keeping up, and gives me a big shit-eating grin. We both take a map as the worker wishes us luck. We both fold and pocket them to hold onto just in case. Callum pulls me in and I feel my heart start racing. It’s dark, the moonlight is hardly able to break through the canopy. The smoke from the fire has drifted into the trees, making it even more ominous and creating an eerie effect. We make a turn and immediately run into mirrors. I yelp at our own reflections, and Callum laughs at my expense.
I love the rush of getting scared, I always have. It’s why Callum and I always had so much fun in the bedroom. He understood me, understood my desires, and never shamed me for it.
We continue to walk, running smack dab into another mirror. I gasp and back up, spinning around.
“Cal?” I spin around and am met with my own reflection once again. He’s nowhere to be seen. I try to go back where I came from but I can’t even find that. I go to pull my map out to find my way but his voice stops me.
