Now Isaac was the one who laughed, a kind of laugh I hadn’t heard from him. My skin crawled, and I stepped back. I knew Isaac wasn’t someone to mess with, but I still hadn’t seen his worst yet.

“And why?”

“Let’s just say he makes our lives a little less comfortable.”

“No, not interested.”

“You don’t have a choice, Isaac. Gregory’s troops are only hours away.” Shit, how did he know where we were? Sure, Emlyn didn’t tell them.

“Cut the crap Dale. Just say what you need to say,” Isaac sneered, his impatience rising.

Dale sighed. “We can’t kill him, the Board will come for us when we do. But you can reclaim your position once you breed with the human and kill him. We only offer our assistance for a favor.”

“No,” Isaac snapped.

“You need it, you know that. You can never reclaim your position without it.”

It seemed he didn’t know about what Emlyn had told us, about the throne. However, they both had one thing in common. Isaac needed an heir.

“Why should I?” Isaac huffed, scanning his surroundings, probably coming up with a plan to fight his way out of here. But we were vastly outnumbered, there was no way out without losing someone we cared about.

“Isaac?” I asked.

He only shook his head. He might think I could never give what he wanted and needed, but I could. After he turned me.

“We will do it,” I said, making the choice.

“Joanne,” he warned, but I wouldn’t listen.

They glared at Isaac, waited for him to say something, but he held his tongue.

“Let us know when it’s time, we will be waiting,” Dale said to me and signaled for his men to leave. “Don’t keep us waiting for too long, though.” His last words sounded like a warning and a small wolf came out of hiding, stalking closer and rubbed its nose against my leg. Isaac snapped at it, showing his formed canines, and the wolf quickly scattered away.

“You have no idea what you have done, you promised something we will never have.”

“We will,” I said.

He huffed, inching closer. “You can’t have children, Joanne.”

“I can, after you turn me.”

A moment of shock was etched on his face. I wondered if it was because he realized I knew this was a possibility or because I told him I wanted to be turned.

“No,” he ordered.

However, I wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Chapter twelve

Anger

Hewouldn’tlookatme when he freed our friends, and I waited silently for him to speak up again. I might have cornered him by making the deal with Dale, but I wanted this—needed this.

And now I had to face the consequences of my actions, face his anger. Take it all and speak up myself.

I told Conner he had to make himself heard, but I had to do the same. Isaac wasn’t to blame for that. I was. I chickened out on numerous occasions.

And no, I couldn’t blame the spell that weird ass pack put me under. I could have tried harder.
