I snort. “Of course you do.”

He waves off my words. “They’re going to go crazy over you, Phoenix. Why don’t you relax until it’s time to go on stage? But maybe don’t fall asleep this time?”

I stick my tongue out at him as he waves one last time, and then it’s just me. Not knowing what else to do, I pull my phone out and start playing some mindless game.

When another knock sounds at the door, I know it’s time.

Setting my phone on the table, I quickly remove my dress and step back into my heels before swinging open the door to reveal Mel.

“It’s time.”

Chapter Six

Damon

There’s a knock on my door at exactly 5:30 p.m.

I grab my bag and swing open the door to find a guy close to my age standing there. He’s handsome enough with his blond hair and brown eyes, but nothing to write home about.

“Blaze?” he asks, and I nod.

“You’re the driver?”

He nods, offering his hand. “Todd.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Todd. I’m assuming it isn’t a long drive?”

“Not at all, sir—“

I laugh, cutting him off. “You don’t need to call me sir. In fact, please don’t. Just Blaze is fine.”

“Right. Depending on traffic, it should only take us about twenty minutes, Blaze.” He hesitates. “Can I take your bag for you?”

“Nah, man. I’ve got it.” Stepping out, I force Todd to take a step back. I lock the door to my apartment before following him down the stairs. I snicker when he opens the back door for me. “Thanks, man.”

Todd looks highly uncomfortable as he climbs into the front seat. “Would you like me to turn on some music?”

“Sure, man. Whatever you want to listen to is fine. I’m not picky.”

The music starts as he pulls away from the curb, and I lean back into my seat as some song I don’t know starts playing. I’m sure it’s really popular now, but I don’t listen to music much. I prefer audiobooks. I only told him to put it on, thinking it might calm him down.

He doesn’t try to talk to me the entire ride and when we stop in front of an abandoned warehouse, I glance at him with a raised eyebrow. “I was led to believe this was some high class place, but this looks abandoned.”

“Ummm… Yeah… They do that on purpose.” Todd is practically stuttering over his words. “They don’t want to draw too much attention, so they leave the outside looking run down.”

I feel like having people show up in town cars would draw attention, but that’s not my problem, is it?

With a shrug, I climb out of the car with my bag in hand, leaving Todd to clamber out of the car behind me.

“If you’ll follow me?” He practically trips over his feet to get to the door before me, opening it and gesturing for me to go ahead of him. We head straight for the elevator, where he enters a code before the doors slide open so we can step inside.

As soon as the door closes and the elevator begins moving down—the club must be underground, which makes sense—I turn to him. “Are you scared of me?”

He shrugs. “Right now? No. You’re not threatening me.”

“Then why are you so damn nervous?”

His face flushes. “This is only my second year driving, and last year I drove a female. I wasn’t even aware there were males to be transported. I was surprised, is all.”
