“One of my bodyguards,” Margery sniggered.
Daddy’s eyebrows drew together. “Your bodyguard hired me?”
She giggled and nodded. “I don’t make the rules. That’s just how it is. Jonesy is one of my bodyguards and decided to hire you as the butler. If you’re nice to both of us, you may get promoted.”
“Promoted. To what?
Margery shrugged her shoulders. “Let me ask Jonesy that. He’s the one who would know since he did hire you.”
“You do that. I’ll get the tea ready while you talk to Jonesy.”
Daddy made himself busy as she started to titter to Jonesy.
“What does Daddy Butler get if he’s nice to us?” she whispered.
She gasped at what Jonesy told her.
“No. There has to be something else. He can’t go from a butler tothat.”
Margery looked at Jonesy, waiting to tell her he made a mistake. But as Jonesy replied, she realized he hadn’t made a mistake.
“I’m not going to tell him that. Nope. There’s no way. That’s a big jump from butler. Don’t you think there should be something in between? Several different things?”
She waited a couple of seconds as Jonesy thought.
“No? I really think it’s a big jump. I think there should be four or five different stages before that. Well, how am I supposed to tell him that? Just tell him? You must be out of your mind. I’m the queen.”
“Is everything okay?” Daddy asked.
Margery looked at Daddy and gave him a smile.
“Umm, yes. I think so. Jonesy and I were just having a heated discussion.”
“And what did Jonesy say about my promotion?”
“Promotion in question. We haven’t decided whether you’re actually getting it or not. Remember, I said if you were nice to both of us, you might get promoted. Keyword, might.”
Daddy raised an eyebrow. “Are you giving me some attitude?”
She straightened her back and looked him directly in the eye. “I am queen. If you ask a stupid question, you’re going to get some attitude.”
“Watch it, Little girl. Just because we’re playing doesn’t give you the right to be rude.”
Margery eyed him. “But I’m the queen. I don’t need to watch my tone to the butler. You work for me, not the other way around.”
Daddy’s eyes narrowed in on her. “Last warning.”
She looked over at Jonesy. “Do you think he’s bluffing?” she whispered.
Jonesy blinked at her several times but didn’t give her an answer.
“Well, you aren’t very helpful,” she mumbled.
“Maybe he’s telling you I’m not bluffing,” Daddy Butler said.
“Ah, shut up.I wasn’t asking you.”
Right as those words came out of her mouth, Margery knew it was a mistake.
