CHAPTER ONE

JANIE

"Can you pass me the pink, please?" Janie asked Charlotte. She had been coloring in everything else while Charlotte used the pink crayon. But there was nothing else to color in on her picture. And the flower had to be pink.

"I'm using it," Charlotte mumbled as she colored with the blue crayon.

"No, you aren't. You haven't for the past couple of minutes," Janie said. "Can I please use it to color in my flower? Then you can have it back."

"I'm using it," she snapped. "Can't you see that?"

Anger bubbled inside of Janie as she stared at Charlotte. She wasn't using it at all. "Please?" Janie asked nicely again.

Echo and Monroe looked between the two, but Janie didn't mind them. There wasn't any other pink besides that one and Janie really wanted to use it.

"Color your flower something different," Charlotte said.

"Pink is my favorite color and it has to be pink," Janie tried to reason with her. But it was getting her nowhere.

"Why don't you just give the pink crayon to Janie for a little bit. You're currently using the blue one right now," Echo said. But Charlotte didn't pay any attention to them.

"Pick a different color," Charlotte said. "I'm using the pink."

Janie attempted to take a deep breath in to calm herself down but it didn't do anything. "Give it to me!" Janie raised her voice. "You aren't using it!" Charlotte glared at her and held onto the pink crayon. Why was she being so unfair? She wasn't even using it.

Before Janie could stop herself, she found her fingers wrapped around Charlotte's hair. "Give it to me!" Janie yelled.

Charlotte screamed as Janie pulled on her hair again. Maybe now she would give her the pink crayon she nicely asked for. Was this wrong of Janie to do it? Sure, but Charlotte had it coming. She wouldn't give her the pink crayon she wasn't using. It wasn't fair. Charlotte continued to scream as Janie pulled her hair again.

A hand wraps around hers and tries to pry her fingers away from Charlotte's hair. "Let the hair go," Mac said. But Janie didn't do that. She wanted the pink crayon.

"No!" Janie yelled.

"Jane, now." Her fingers let loose a little, just enough that Mac could get the hair from her fingers.

"You're coming with me," Mac said. Janie looked over her shoulder as Mac dragged her across the room. Monroe and Echo were looking at Charlotte and her. Finn was currently walking Charlotte over to the opposite corner of the room.

"Do you want to tell me what that was all about?" Mac asked as he stood in front of her.

Janie wanted to see if Charlotte was getting in trouble for what she had done. It wasn't fair and she shouldn't have withheld the pink crayon from anyone. She tried to peek her head around Mac's body, but he wouldn't allow that.

"Eyes. Now," he said. Her eyes found his and she could see the satisfaction in his eyes.

"Now, why did you yell and pull Charlotte's hair?" Mac asked. "And don't you dare lie to me. Unless you want your punishment to be worse."

Her mouth fell open. She was going to get in trouble for that? Charlotte was the one that started it.

"Don't look so shocked. What you did was wrong," Mac said. "Now tell me why you did it."

"She was being mean," Janie whispered. Mac stayed silent. Did he hear her? "She wouldn't hand over the pink crayon when she wasn't even using it," Janie softly spoke, louder than before.

She had realized that she made a scene earlier. Janie wasn't thinking about it at the time, but she had. People were looking at them. Thankfully, most of them had gone back to what they were doing before. Or well, the ones she could see through her peripherals. Janie couldn't really see around Mac's body much.

"Did you ask nicely?" Mac asked.

"Of course, I did," she replied. "Several times. Ask Monroe and Echo! They were there!"

Mac sighed and grabbed her shoulder. He knelt down in front of her. "But that doesn't give you the excuse to yell or pull her hair," Mac said.
