CHAPTER THREE
HEDDA
Hedda had been sitting next to her window for the past twenty minutes. Michael had tried to get her to eat but she didn't want anything. Nothing sounded good and she had lost her appetite.
She was exhausted but no matter how much she wanted to sleep, she wasn’t going to. Nightmares plagued her nights, and she would rather stay up and be exhausted than sleep.
She had felt herself nodding off several times during the day, but she would get up and walk around her room to stay awake. Sometimes she would go and sneak caffeine pills to keep her awake. Each time she would go get one of the pills, she would grab an extra one in case.
Michael had four bottles of caffeine pills and she always changed which bottle she got it from. Why he had that many, she didn’t know but she wasn’t complaining right now. Hedda knew eventually he would find out because the bottles would be empty, but she washoping she would be out of the house before that happened. But for now, Hedda needed those pills so she could stay awake.
She knew it wasn't the wisest idea to take them and not sleep at all, but she didn't care right now. She would rather be awake than try to sleep and be woken up from a nightmare. No one wanted that.
"Do you want to go out with me?" Monroe asked. "I was thinking about heading to the mall and maybe getting some ice cream."
"No," Hedda replied.
She didn't want to go out and she really didn't want to get ice cream.
"You can't stay in the house the whole time. You need to leave at some point, get fresh air and human interaction," Monroe softly said. "It might do you some good."
"Fuck you!" Hedda raised her voice. "You don't know what is fucking good for me. You fucking don't! So don't pretend like you do because you fucking don't!"
Monroe's eyes went wide as she stared at Hedda. Tears filled her eyes but Hedda didn't feel bad. Monroe had it coming asking her several times and then saying she had to leave the house soon. That wasn't her place to say.
"Monroe," Michael said. "Go wait downstairs for Daddy. I need to talk to Hedda real quick."
Hedda watched as Monroe left and Michael took a step towards her. She knew what she did was wrong, but Monroe had it coming.
"Face me," Michael said.
"No," Hedda replied.
She didn't need to face Michael. She didn't need to look at him.
"Face me or there are going to be consequences," he said.
Hedda stared at him with fury building inside of her.
"You can't give me fucking consequences!" She yelled. "You aren't my Daddy."
His face went still and she suppressed a shiver that threatened to take over her body. She had never seen Michael like this.
"No, I'm not your Daddy," he said calmly. "I do know two men who would be more than happy to give you your punishment."
She went silent as he mentioned the twins. Hedda didn't want them coming here. She didn't want to see them.
"You're staying in my house," he said. "I'm being gracious and letting you stay here but Monroe will come first. You have been rude to her on several occasions, cursing at her when she has been nothing but kind to you. If you continue to do that, we can find somewhere else for you to stay at or you can go back to New York."
Hedda blinked several times as she took in everything he had just said.
She didn't want to go back to New York and she didn't want to change who she was. She always cursed, it was just who she was. If they didn't want her here, then she had nowhere to go. She didn't feel safe anywhere, not even here but it was better than nothing.
"Whatever you went through was traumatic and everyone deals with it in different ways, but how you are dealing with it isn't healthy. You need to be eating, sleeping, and gettingsome sun and you aren't," Michael said. "If you are going to stay here, there are going to be rules."
Hedda made a face at the word rules. She didn't need rules and she wasn't going to follow them.
Michael let out a sigh and she bit back a smile. Maybe if she continued to do the same things, they would let her stay and just let her be herself.
