Leo couldn't wait for the day when Hedda trusted both of them. He couldn't wait for the day she told them what was going on so they could help her. That was all he wanted to do. Help her overcome whatever memory she was pushing down to get away from.
It wasn't healthy and he was hoping to help her realize that. Leo and Oliver had seen several veterans push thingsdown, not dealing with them, and it normally didn't end well. They didn't want that for Hedda. She was precious to them and they wanted to help her get better.
Neither one of them liked to see people suffer by themselves. It was always better to lean on people and not go through it alone. Or that was what they found out helped them when they got back from deployment. And they had helped several other veterans by being their support system.
Whimpers came through the baby monitor and both of them turned towards it. Was that her or was it just their minds playing tricks on them?
"I don't think it was anything," Leo said. "Maybe she just slept on her arm wrong or she turned wrong."
The whimper didn't seem urgent or like she was scared. He hoped that was the case.
Oliver took his last swig of his scotch before placing it down on the counter.
"Do you want," Oliver started to say but went silent as more whimpers filled the room.
Shit. Was she having a nightmare?
They listened for a couple of seconds. Leo could hear her tossing and turning in the bed, her whimpers starting to fill the room again.
"Let's go," Leo said as he got up from his chair.
Both of them made their way towards her room. They skipped stairs and jogged down the hallway, trying to make up ground.
Leo opened the door and walked in. The first thing he saw was Hedda moving in her bed and whimpering every once in a while.
Oliver walked over towards the bed and grabbed her hand with his, his other hand gently running through her hair. Leo walked over to the other side and grabbed her other hand. Maybe that would calm her down.
But it didn't seem to.
Hedda started to thrash more in the bed. Normally she was awake by this point. Leo looked over at Oliver, only to see him leaning down next to her ear. He could hear him whispering sweet things in her ear.
He hoped it worked. If it didn't, they were going to wake her up. Leo didn't like it when she had nightmares but normally it was okay because she woke up. But this time, she wasn't waking up.
Hedda ever so slowly started to calm down as Oliver continued to whisper in her ear.
"Such a good girl," Oliver whispered.
Leo watched as he pulled back from her but he continued to hold her hand. He had started to rub the back of her hand as he watched Oliver interact with her.
He couldn't wait for the day when she would allow them to show affection towards her and she would accept it. She seemed hell bent on not accepting their affection and as much as it hurt, Leo knew it was her way of trying to keep them at arm's length.
Oliver and Leo looked at each other and he nodded his head. They could sit here all night and hold her hand but Leo knew if she woke up with them right next to her, she wouldn't be happy.
Both of them let go of her hand and quietly left the room.Leo didn't want to leave Hedda and it hurt with each step he took away from her.
"I fucking hate leaving her," Oliver growled. "So fucking stupid."
"Soon," Leo said. "We'll get there soon."
Leo looked back at the closed door and sighed. He felt the same way as Oliver right now.
"Maybe we should move her in there full time," Leo said. "Maybe she can get some decent sleep in there."
"Sure, but I don't know if it will actually help or not," Oliver pointed out. "She's sleeping in there right now and is still having a nightmare."
Leo sighed and nodded his head. He was right about that.
"But it wouldn't hurt to try," Leo said. "This is her first one that hasn't been bad."
