Chapter Four

Holy hell, that was more than a kiss. That was the best kiss of my entire life.

“No more telling me no, we’re going to dinner.”

“We are?” I ask, biting my lip as a grin starts to pull at my mouth.

“We are,” He smiles, tugging my lip out from between my teeth.

“Okay,” I breathe, unable to tell this man no after being struck dumb by the kiss he gave me. I’ve given up the fight. What point is there in saying no, when what I really want is to say yes?

“Give me your phone Sweet Maddie.”

Still in a fog from our kiss, I give it to him and watch as he puts his number in my contacts and texts himself so he has mine as well.

Handing it over, he looks me in the eye. “I’m going to call you tomorrow and you’re going to answer,” he says before releasing it.

“We’ll see,” I flirt.

Grinning, Jonah kisses me softly before making sure I’m safe inside, then walks back to his truck and gets in. I watch him from the window until he pulls out of my driveway and drives off.

When I finally walk into the living room, Ally, my babysitter is staring at me expectantly with a silly smile on her face. I’m pretty sure she thinks I’m a nut.

Clearing my throat, I cross my arms over my chest. “How did everything go tonight?”

Ally stands from where she was sitting on the couch. “Great, like always. Gracie’s a great kid.”

“Thanks again for coming on such short notice,” I say, handing her two twenties for the night. Liz texted me out of the blue begging me to go out for a drink with her. It has been months since I’d gone out for a girl’s night, so I checked with Ally to see if she was available.

She grins. “As I said, Gracie’s great. I don’t mind watching her whenever you need me to.”

“Thanks, Ally. Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.”

Nodding she throws her backpack over her shoulder. “You too.”

As soon as she leaves, I look in on Gracie who is sleeping peacefully in her bed, and give her a kiss after pulling her covers up. I make my way into my room and take a long hot shower, all the while imagining what that kiss could have turned into. It’s been so long since someone has touched me the way Jonah did tonight, and although it was barely anything, my body is still tingling. Mark never made me feel this way in all the years we were together.

After drying off and pulling on a nightshirt, I crawl into bed and get comfortable hoping to fall asleep quickly. Instead, my mind spirals, overthinking every scenario to the point that I’m convinced seeing Jonah again would be a mistake. I eventually fall asleep.

Ugh,it’s too early to talk to people. My phone rings again for the third or fourth time. Liz knows better than to call me before I’ve had my first cup of coffee. Grabbing it, I see the missed call was from Jonah not Liz, as well as a few missed texts. Sitting up in bed, I read through the messages.

Jonah:Good morning Sweet Maddie

Jonah:Please tell me you and Gracie like donuts because I just

got an assload of them and want to share

Jonah:I’ll be there in ten minutes

“What the hell? Who comes over uninvited at this time of day?” I mumble to myself. I roll out of bed and quickly pull on some leggings, a sports bra, a white tank top, and my favorite hot pink hoodie. I rush to the bathroom and brush my teeth before pulling my messy hair into a bun. I put on some body spray then run out of my room to find Gracie in her jammies watching cartoons on the couch.

“Hi mommy,” She smiles. See, even Gracie knows not to wake me on the weekend, and she’s four.

“Hi baby,” I say, just as there’s a knock at our door. I smile at Gracie, who looks toward the door curiously. “We’re having a friend over for breakfast.”

A huge grin transforms her face as she jumps up on the couch and claps her hands. I wasn’t ever the cheering type, but my Gracie might be.
