I take a deep breath and step towards the door. My heart is beating a thousand beats a minute and my hands are trembling. The minute I open that door, I’m opening myself up to something more than breakfast. Whatever happens next, I’m not entirely sure I’m ready for, but I’m excited at the possibility.
Peeking through the peephole, I see Jonah standing there looking just as good as he did last night. Maybe even better. He’s wearing a smile and holding a pink box from the bakery in town along with a drink holder with three to-go cups.
“Sweet Maddie, I know you’re on the other side of that door. Do us both a favor and let me in.”
I unlock the door and open it, getting a better look at the man I haven’t been able to get out of my head. He’s wearing a pair of faded jeans and long sleeve black henley.
“Good morning Beautiful.”
My cheeks burn and my stomach flutters. “Good morning Jonah, come on in,” I say, standing to the side so he’ll come in.
“Thank you,” He says and drops a kiss on my cheek as he walks past me into the living room.
“Well if it isn’t the prettiest little girl I ever did see.” I hear him say.
“Jonah!” Gracie screams.
I walk in to find Gracie hugging his side and holding on as tight as she can.
“Here, let me take that,” I say laughing, grabbing the drinks out of his left hand.
Jonah gets down on his knees to he’s on her level. “Ms. Gracie, I have a very important question for you. Are you ready for the best breakfast ever?”
She nods her head as she hangs on every word Jonah says.
“Tell me, do you like donuts?”
Gracie puts her hands on her hips to stare him down sassily. “What kind of donuts?”
Jonah’s eyes widen as he turns to look at me and I just shrug at him, trying my best but failing to hold back my laughter.
“Why the very best kind of course,” he says and opens the donut box, presenting them to Gracie for inspection.
Gracie’s eyes get as big as saucers as she looks up at me. “Can I have one Mommy?”
“Go wash your hands and then get to the table.”
Gracie immediately turns and runs down the hall to her bathroom.
Jonah stands and puts the donuts on the round table that sits in our kitchen then walks over to where I’m watching him, my ass pressed against the edge of the counter. Using his finger, he lifts my chin up to look at him as he studies my face. “Did I wake you up?”
I shrug. “It’s not a big deal.”
“I’m sorry.”
Mark would say sorry, but it never felt genuine. When Jonah says it I believe him. “Well, you’re lucky you brought donuts,” I grumble.
Jonah laughs and gives me a quick kiss that leaves me wanting a lot more than he can give me right now.
“Mommy I’m ready,” Gracie calls from the table where she’s sitting patiently.
“I got her a hot chocolate since she seemed to really like it the other day. I hope that’s okay,” He says low so only I can hear.
“She’ll love it.”
Jonah smiles and grabs the smaller cup and turns towards the table. “Here you go, sweet girl. It’s hot chocolate.”
Gracie takes the cup. “Thank you, Jonah.”
