He blows out a long, low whistle. “I would tell you that’s a huge mistake.”

“Wow—nice friend you are.”

“Listen, I love the guy like a brother. But his track record is—how should I put this—fucking awful. I can’t remember him dating anyone seriously. I’m not even sure he’s ever had a real girlfriend.”

“So? That’s fine by me. Who said I’m in the market for a boyfriend?”

“You don’t need to say it, Trix. It’s who you are. You’re not a hook-up person, never have been.”

“Well, maybe I’m starting now. Maybe relationships are overrated and I’m just looking for a good time.”

“Okay, TMI. I really don’t want to hear about your sex life.”

“You asked,” I point out.

He kicks at the panties and I cringe. I really wish I hadn’t left those behind last night. Then this entire conversation could have been avoided.

“All I’m saying is be careful. I love Colt to death, but he’s not good with women. He loves ‘em and leaves ‘em. I’d hate to see you get hurt again.”

His eyes flick to mine, full of brotherly concern, and I low-key want to morph into the wall and disappear. My brother knowing about me and Colt hooking up is exactly what I wanted to avoid.

“Heard, loud and clear. But don’t worry about me. I’m a big girl and can take care of myself. Things between me and Colt are casual. He’s leaving to go back to L.A. anyway. Nothing serious is happening between us.”

“Good. He’s a great guy, but he’s not boyfriend material and he’s certainly not husband material.”

“Duly noted. Is that the end of your TED talk? Because I was kinda on my way out.” I hitch my thumb at the front door, my insides churning.

“Yeah, that’s it.”

“Okay. I’ll see you on Saturday at T-ball.”

“Great, William will love that.”

Together, we walk to the door. Out on the sidewalk, Danny reaches out and touches my arm.

“I’m serious, Trix. Colt’s awesome, but he’s not a forever guy. Be careful.”

I roll my eyes at my brother, aggravation thrumming through me.

“I got it, Danny. Colt’s a good-time guy, not a husband contender. I understand. Now how about you focus on your own deal with Ana and the kids and stop spending so much time worrying about me.”

He bristles at my insinuation, but lets it slide. “Fine. But don’t say I didn’t warn you, Trix.”

Then my brother walks away without so much as a wave.

Well, shit. That didn’t go well at all. So much for having a secret, friends-with-benefits arrangement. The one person we didn’t want to find out knows and I hope it doesn’t damage Danny and Colt’s friendship. I’d hate to come between them.

Maybe Colt and I shouldn’t have gotten involved in the first place.

My chest aches at the thought and I quickly shove it aside. No, this thing between me and Colt feels real. He’s different than everyone thinks, not just a shallow party guy. He’s funny and helpful and fun to be around. Smart and determined, hard-working.

I know I shouldn’t catch feelings for him, my brother’s absolutely right.

Unfortunately, I think it may be too late for that.
