As soon as I step into the bedroom, she turns to me, her arms cradled around the bundle wrapped in a thick fleece swaddle.
“Shh,” Lila whispers. “He just fell asleep.”
I nod, cautiously stepping onto the rug without my shoes and padding across the room toward my mate and our newborn. A blissful wave of calm washes over me when the pup sighs a hum of contentment, a little burp escaping his puckered lips.
Lila does her best to stifle her giggle as she gently lays our baby in his crib. I follow her, wrapping my arms over her chest from behind and propping my chin on her shoulder. Watching baby Finch sleep peacefully has been our favorite pastime all week.
I don’t think it’ll ever get old, watching our newborn navigate the heavens of blissful dreams without any limitations.
Still, Lila has been adamant to get out of the house for some fresh air. I can’t blame her, since the last time she hunted was two months ago, before our growing pup became too big for her to shift.
Lila turns to me and nods toward the door, and we both head out. Gently closing the door behind her, a mischievous smirk curls her lips.
“Who’s watching him while we’re out?” I ask, still whispering in the hallway so that Finch doesn’t wake up.
“Val’s already on her way here,” Lila replies, skipping down the hall. “Grandpa Tomas offered to babysit, but I didn’t wanna bother him.”
I wince as we head down the stairs. “That would have been a terrible idea,” I chuckle. “He was no good with my brother and me. He’d be much worse now.”
Lila giggles, shaking her head. “You’d be surprised. I, for one, was shocked when your father fed baby Finch yesterday.”
“Yeah…the Lycoan men have many tricks up their sleeves,” I muse as we head out.
“Hm…” she hums contemplatively. “I don’t think any of you have this one particular trick.”
“The one you promised to show me today?”
She nods eagerly, a bright smile on her face. All I can do is bask in the glory of being in her presence as we make our way through the town square. Even though I’m the Alpha, I notice that we’re turning heads because of Lila.
If there’s any trick up her sleeve, it’s that motherhood becomes her in a way that sets her above the rest. Destined to be the Luna, she embodies the feminine essence of the moon itself.
Incredible…
As we pass by the library, Lila suddenly stops and lifts my arm, twirling before the window.
“What are you doing?” I ask with a frown, though amused when she spins a full three-sixty and giggles with a lightheartedness that exudes her femininity.
“I just realized I’ve lost a lot of weight,” she says, stopping her spinning and tilting her head at her reflection.
“It’s probably your heightened metabolism now that you have a wolf,” I offer with a nonchalant shrug.
“At least I'm not a baby elephant anymore,” she murmurs, to my horror.
“Hey!” I protest, stepping in front of her to block out her reflection and block out any ridiculous thoughts. “Baby elephants are cute!”
Lila narrows her eyes at me and huffs. “Are you saying you were calling me 'cute' back then?”
“I’m reminding you that it was the baby elephant who I fell in love with. Okay?”
When she blushes, I can breathe easily, knowing that she’s only pulling my leg. “Good answer. You’re lucky I know that you’re not lying.”
“What does that mean?” I ask with a confused chuckle as I follow her toward the valley.
“I wanna show you something,” Lila says as she reaches out her hand and tugs at mine. I allow her to lead me across the meadow until we have to climb rocks to get to the other side of the ravine.
“Right…here…” she purposefully stomps a foot on a patch of moist grass.
“What is here?” I ask, looking all around us.
