“I’m fine, promise.”
As soon as the words leave my mouth, a snippet of memory, something about promises, tries to surface, but I can’t quite latch onto it.
“Great, you’re fine,” she snaps. “Now I need to get my blood pressure under control.”
“Why? What’s wrong?”
“You scared me!” she shrieks.
Guilt settles like a lead balloon in my stomach. “I really am sorry, Leah. Do you wanna come over and see for yourself that I’m okay?”
Leah snorts again. “No. Oh, trust me, I would if I could, but I’ve got stuff to get done before…”
“Before what?” I prod.
“I have a date tonight.”
“Really? Who’s the lucky guy?”
“Uh, Jackyl.”
At the mention of the biker she’s set her sights on, an image of Journey pops into my head.
“Hey, maybe you and Journey could double-date with us,” she says when I remain silent.
“Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.”
“Why? You two clearly have chemistry.”
“You know why.”
“Wren, you can’t spend your entire life alone because you’re scared.”
“I’m not alone,” I remind her. “I’ve got you.”
“You know what I mean.”
“I do, and my answer is the same. I’m not seeing Journey again. There is nothing good that could come from it. I’d end up getting attached, and when he inevitably gets sick of my numerous personalities, he’ll break my heart. No, thanks.”
“And what if he doesn’t get sick of you or them?” she counters.
But this doesn’t mean I’m giving up.
Journey’s words before he left echo in my skull, but I shake them away.
“That’s not something I’m willing to wait and find out.
CHAPTER 13
JOURNEY
She might have been born from evil, but she doesn’t have an ounce of bad in her.
“Sit down, and shut up!”
Crow glares at each brother as he swivels his gaze around the table. Today was supposed to be a day off from club business, but Pres called an emergency meeting, so here we are.
Once the chatter stops and my brothers sit down, Pres focuses his attention on me. “Something you wanna share with the class, J?”
