At the sound of the whistle, both the goalkeeper and I were running to get to the ball first. She was the first one to touch the ball, but she made the mistake of moving too far away from the net.

I slammed the ball out from underneath her hockey stick before she could even think about going for a shot, and watched in satisfaction as the ball went for a goal.

The match carried on for another few minutes with us staying in the lead and Tammy doing an amazing job at blocking.

We celebrated like any other day we won. Our first match is in the bag and it felt good to know we were moving on to the next round.

The other team congratulated us before we made our way towards the locker room so the next two teams can battle it out.

“I don’t think she likes you very much,” Megan joked catching the glares I was receiving from the player who tripped me.

“I don’t think her team is happy with her right now,” I remarked. The thought of knowing that could have been me made me appreciate my progress because three years ago that would have been me.

“She did break code when she shoved you out there after being the one with the infringement,” Megan noted.

“Maybe she thought she could blame me since I have a record.”

Megan chuckled, but it came to an abrupt pause.

I turned my head to look at her wondering what could be wrong when she ran off without saying a word.

My eyes followed her through the crowd of people and I smiled as I watched her jump into Jared’s arms who caught her without her dropping her even when he didn’t expect it.

Nobody was sure if they were a couple now or what was going on, but it was safe to say that something is cooking between them.

My smile faded when I noticed that Jared wasn’t alone. Brandon stood beside him unaware that I was staring at him with wide eyes—only going wider.

CHAPTER SEVENTY

This was my chance to get this off my chest—tell him that I am sorry that I was an idiot and that I love him, but at that precise moment he turned to look at me, I got the hell out of there.

The locker room was the only place where I could hideaway for a short while to get my breathing and drumming heart under control.

I am courageous and tough when it comes to leading eleven other girls out on a field in front of spectators who hates me for no particular reason, but I was a coward when it came to my feelings.

I couldn’t stay in the locker rooms forever as other teams were still using them and it would be ridiculous when other teams have to see my self-pity.

With shoulders pulled back, I headed out with my team pretending to be part of their party arrangements when all I wanted was to catch a glimpse of him.

My luck finally ran out—there wasn’t any sign of him when we got outside and I almost feared the possibility that he left or that he wasn’t even here in the beginning.

“You, okay?” Camille asked—noting my foul mood when I reached Travis’ truck.

“Peachy,” I muttered and threw my bags in the back.

Jaylin gave me a questioning look. “You want me and Camille to go beat up whoever is responsible for that look on your face?”

“I fear that it will only make him run further away” I slid in the back and greeted Travis who was sitting behind the wheel.

“Brandon? He’s here?” Camille asked scooting in beside me where Corbin showed up a few minutes later on with drinks.

I nodded. “I don’t know if I just imagined it, but I got out of there as if I was being chased by lightning.”

Camille punched me on the shoulder.

“Ow! What was that for?” I grumbled at her.

“You are being an idiot,”
