“I didn’t kiss her. Let’s start there.” He began.
“She came over to me and embraced me. I pushed her away the minute I realized what she was doing and said the meanest things to her that will take forever to heal from, but I guess the camera failed to record that.”
“What was she even doing there?” I felt like screaming, but I wasn’t in the mood for causing a scene.
“I don’t know. From day one there wasn’t a sign from her until the final match.”
“I made a promise to you that I will come back to you because I…” He stopped midsentence his eyes meeting mine.
“It doesn’t matter…you already made up your mind.” He took my hand in his and placed the ring back in my hand.
“You were always the girl I wanted to be with. Ashley or any other girl I meet will never be you.”
He brushed my cheek with a kiss and whispered something into my ear before moving away.
“You will forever be the girl who owns my heart,” He pulled away just long enough to meet my eyes before he walked away.
I wish I have the strength in me to run after him and beg…beg for what?
A chance?
To forgive me for being insecure when it comes to love?
I gazed down at the ring he placed back in my hand and noticed he left his new championship ring with me as well.
A second promise that he will return.
I barely grasped what was happening when a single tear escaped from my eye and landed on my thigh.
I was used to sadness—it has been my constant shadow, but this felt different compared to the day I lost my mom.
The feeling of losing him felt worst than losing my mom. She was dead while he was still alive and the thought of seeing him moving on without me hurt.
What if Jaylin was right and he is the guy that got away and there was no chance of getting him back?
“I’m such an idiot!” I grumbled, shoving both rings into my denim shorts pocket before trying to stand up from the table.
“Whoa, kid where are you running off to?” Camille questioned catching me by my elbow when my legs gave out when they touched the ground.
“Why are you crying? What happened?” She asked her eyes growing wide when she noticed my wet cheeks.
“Brandon was here,” Jaylin said coming over to check on me.
Camille looked stunned when her eyes met mine and then she turned to look for him but he was already gone.
“Where is he now?” She asked looking back at me.
I shrugged. “He is probably halfway across the country by now,” I said with a note of sarcasm.
“What did he say?” Camille asked leading me back over to the table where she doctored my scraped knee with ointment and bandages.
“That I broke his heart for not wanting to hear him out and because it seems as if I falsely accused him of cheating when we weren’t even together at that time, so it can’t be called cheating.” Oh, man I was rambling and not even making sense to myself.
“What if this was just another way for Ashley to get back at me?” Jaylin and Camille frowned.
“Getting back at you for what?” Camille questioned.
“Brandon has always had this crush on me since high school, but I barely acknowledged him and so nothing happened until I met him months ago. Ashley figured it out when she tried to ask him out on a date and he respectfully turned her down.” When she didn’t even deserve it.
