Jaylin and Camille were somewhere hiding while I stayed glued to Travis’s side as he handled a paintball gun quite well and have taken out most of the competition.
It was a Saturday mid-afternoon and my friends decided to do something that was supposed to be fun to distract my mind. The fun part was shooting at someone and not getting shot as those balls left quite a mark.
Travis and I finally took over one of the obstacles when we shot the guy who was protecting it. We also found Corbin who ran over to us and wanted to know where the girls were.
I had a feeling they were working on a plan to ambush our competitors as I knew them. We heard a loud whistle and when we raised our heads, we noticed it was Jaylin signaling us.
I ducked when someone shot at us and chuckled when Corbin got shot having Camille react by shooting the guy between his legs.
“Damn, you don’t have to be worried about your wife having your back,” Travis muttered while chuckling at Corbin who stood up—raising his hands to show that he was out.
“Yeah, she’s pretty awesome,” He said before leaving the course and joining the ones we have taken out.
“We are sitting ducks,” I acknowledged when there were two shooters left and they kept taking shots at us.
Travis looked at me and he had his thinking face on. “One has to distract the guy while the other goes for the shot.”
I rolled my eyes. “Duh, and of course, being the girl, I have to be the distraction.”
Travis chuckled at my sarcasm. “I thought I would be a distraction while you get to the girls and take these guys out.”
I arched an eyebrow but didn’t think twice to accept his suggestion. I crawled to either side of the obstacle and took a peek at where this asshole was. I gave Travis the thumbs up, gesturing for him it is safe to run.
I raised my paintball gun and held my finger over the trigger. I saw the shot and heard Travis grunt, but I at least got the shooter. I jumped up as we planned and ran like hell over to where Jaylin was hiding.
I yelped when a shot went just past me and splashed against the tree.
I dived to the ground and got behind the wall of rocks they were hiding behind.
“Nice of you to join us,” Camille said dryly.
I couldn’t come up with a remark because Jaylin called for us to run.
“Shit!” Jaylin grumbled when she got shot in the thigh.
“Run you pansies!” She ordered—raising her arms in the air and making her way over to where Travis was waiting for her.
Camille was a lot faster than me on her feet, but I caught up eventually and dived behind me the obstacle when the guy was right behind us.
She got shot and didn’t sound happy while I tried my best to stay quiet. There was at least a small hole between the two obstacles where I saw the guy’s feet, but before I could take a shot, I found him standing on top of me pointing his gun at me.
He made the mistake to think while I didn’t.
With my finger on the trigger, I took a double shot and shot him in the chest.
The guy was completely stunned as he stood frozen in place trying to comprehend that I shot him meanwhile I rolled over onto my side and got to my feet—wincing when I noticed I scrapped my knee from the dive I took.
I smiled when I was joined on the course by a cheering Jaylin and Camille who helped me over to the nearest table when they saw me limping.
“Have you always been this competitive?” Camille asked—her voice laced with humor as she took a closer look at my injured knee while Jaylin handed her some water and some paper towel to clean the wound.
“I don’t know if it is a curse or a good thing,” I muttered.
Pulling a face when the scar was a bit over-sensitive when she patted it dry.
“Being competitive and not second-guessing your instincts is a good quality, kid. You just have to rely on your intuition to know when it does become a curse for you.”
I nodded.
