I watched him leave the shower and pull something from the pocket of his pants before rejoining me.

“Do you want to know why I was at your house today?”

“ESP?”

“Close your eyes, Sugarbear.”

I did as he asked. It still got to me every time he uttered that ridiculously sweet nickname.

“I brought you this, because I had an important question for you.”

I opened my eyes. My heart stopped. The water streamed over a small, turquoise leather box—a Tiffany blue box—a fucking jewelry box. “My God.”

He pressed the tiny silver button on the front, and the lid popped open. A gorgeous diamond ring sat in the black velvet—wet black velvet now.

“Kelly, will you do me the honor of taking my name? And, no I’m not going to kneel in here.”

I couldn’t believe it. The ring every little girl dreamed of stared up at me. All I had to do was say yes. I schooled my face into as impassive a look as I could manage. “What if I want to keep my name?”

He shook his head. “Non-negotiable. And we’re not doing hyphenated either.”

I couldn’t contain my smile any longer. “Okay, okay, okay. Yes.” I jumped up into his arms to kiss him.

Bad idea.

The box fell from his hand and ended up on the floor of the shower.

Adam slipped as he caught me, and we almost ended up in a heap on the tile, before he steadied himself and held me up by the ass. “Careful there. Telling your family about this is going to be hard enough without having to explain you getting injured hopping onto my dick.”

I laughed so hard I almost couldn’t hold on. “I may have to leave some parts out when the kids ask how you proposed.” My insides heated at the thought we’d be making babies together.

“Good idea.”

The water on my back was running colder now. “You need a bigger water heater.”

“Yeah, it’s only going to get worse.” He put me down.

I leaned down to retrieve the little leather box. It was empty. “The ring. It’s gone.”

“Do you see it?”

“Don’t move.” I knelt and scanned the floor. A chill ran through me when I saw it.

The gold band had slipped into the slotted drain, and caught on the stone. A smaller diamond would have been a goner now. With my fingernails, I grabbed the stone setting and gently lifted.

It came up through the slot in one piece, and I could finally breathe again. “I got it.”

He laughed. “That would have complicated the story.”

I palmed the ring and stood.

Adam took the ring and slid it on my finger. “It’s official now. You’re mine.”

“You mean, you’re mine.”

He turned off the water. “That too.”

As we dried off, I couldn’t help but look over at my man and wonder how I’d gotten so lucky.
