Oscar stood beside Sebastian, the two of them facing me together, like two people who actually liked each other. If I wasn’t concerned about what was going on here, I’d be happy for the progress they were making in their relationship.
“This is an intervention,” Oscar said.
“Oh? An intervention for what?”
“You did it for me,” Oscar said. “We’re repaying the favor.”
“You can owe me for later,” Sebastian said with a little shrug.
I hadn’t done anything special for Oscar.
“You screwed up. You have to apologize,” Sebastian said.
“I’m…sorry?” I chuckled a nervous chuckle. “What am I apologizing for?”
“Not to us,” Oscar said. “To Esme.”
Oh.
“I know she told you to leave her alone. I know Gabriel told you to leave, too. I know more details than I care to,” Oscar said.
Sebastian shot him a questioning look.
“Morgan and Layana are best friends,” he said.
Sebastian didn’t seem to understand any more than he had before.
“The point is,you shouldn’t have left the island,” Oscar said.
“I had to,” I said.
“Why?” Sebastian asked.
“You two of all people should understand,” I said.
“Dad,” Oscar said.
“You’re not him,” Sebastian said.
“I took one woman along with me to the wedding and slept with another while I was there,” I said.
“That’s an oversimplification of the situation and you know it,” Oscar said.
Sebastian said, “If you’re not there for her and for your kid, that’s what makes you like Dad.”
“I’m going to screw up,” I said.
“Everyone screws up,” Oscar said.
“You love her,” Sebastian said.
“He does,” Oscar said.
“Love isn’t enough,” I said.
“That’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever said,” Oscar said.
Sebastian laughed.
