Page 90 of Fatal Betrayal

"Do you want me to call 911?"

"No. I need to call Flynn. He and Damon should handle this." Despite her words, she didn't reach for the phone. "Let's take a look around first. Don't touch anything, Cooper."

"Are you sure we shouldn't just get out of here?"

"We will soon. I just need a minute." She made a quick perusal of the first floor, which didn't seem all that lived in. It felt more like a decorator showcase than someone's actual home. When she reached the second floor, everything changed. The office had been ripped apart in what appeared to be a violent and hasty search, with files and papers strewn on the floor. The guest bedroom next door was untouched but the master bedroom at the end of the hall had also been trashed.

"What were they looking for?" Cooper muttered.

She met his gaze. "Whatever they killed him to get."

His lips tightened. "Does this mean he wasn't in charge, wasn't the one calling the shots, trying to get us killed?"

"There's definitely someone else in charge, but he still could have given out our location. At some point, he became less valuable." She wandered over to the chair by the desk where a jacket hung around the arms of a chair, the same jacket she'd seen Burnett wearing the day before. She instinctively searched the pockets, not sure what she was looking for, but when she found a receipt, she pulled it out. It was time-stamped yesterday, Wednesday at one thirty. Burnett had bought several pacifiers and a baby blanket.

"What's that?" Cooper asked.

She handed him the receipt. "Burnett bought baby items. But he never had kids, so what's that about?"

"Could he be buying supplies for Elisa? But even if he was tied into her case, wouldn't someone else do that? Someone less obvious than an FBI agent?"

"Good point. But we need to check out that store."

She led the way down the stairs and out of the house. They walked quickly to the car. Once inside, Cooper started the engine and pulled away.

When they were three blocks away, she took out her phone and called Flynn. "It's me, Andi."

"Are you all right?" Flynn's voice was tense. "I've been worrying about you since the alarms went off last night. I take it you got out through the tunnel."

"Yes. I'm very glad you told me about it. There were at least two gunmen."

"We were able to replay the video from here. Couldn't identify the shooters, but they knew what they were doing. Why didn't you take the car?"

"I was afraid to. Someone sold us out. I don't know who. But they had the code to get into the house. How many people have that?"

"Not many."

"What about agents in the LA office? What about Damon?"

"There are a couple of agents in that office who know about it. We held someone there on another joint investigation last year."

"So it's not as secret as it could be."

"No," Flynn agreed, a terse note in his voice. "Where are you now?"

"It doesn't matter. You need to go to Agent Burnett's house. When you get there, you'll need to call the coroner."

"What happened, Andi?"

"I don't know, but Agent Burnett was shot in the head, and his house looked trashed. I think Burnett might be involved in Elisa's kidnapping, maybe other cases as well, like the one from my past. He was very angry when Damon took him off the case and gave it to me. There's something big going on here. Something with huge stakes."

"I figured that out after the attacks on you yesterday. Let me get you to a safer location."

"I'm safer on my own."

"Are you on your own, or are you with Bradford?"

"I'll check in with you later. Be careful what you say to Damon. If Burnett is dirty, he might be, too."
