They got into the club and followed Ross back to his office. “What’s going on?” Leo asked.
“I just had a very strange phone call with my father,” Zane said.
“What’s new about that?” Ross teased. “Aren’t all conversations with Bobby strange?”
“No, this was a different kind of strange,” Zane insisted. “I told him about Crew looking around the club and asking questions about a murder that’s about a year old and he didn’t seem surprised.”
“Maybe murders of random women don’t surprise him anymore,” Leo said. “I mean, you do know what our fathers did for a living, right? We might not be running things by the old rules, but they sure did.”
“That wasn’t the strange part,” Zane said. “He mentioned that the woman had been found in a private room, but I never told him that part. I’m sure of it. So, if my father didn’t know about the murder, how did he know that her body was found in a private room?”
“That’s a question that I might be able to answer,” Crew said. Shit, the last thing that Zane wanted was to start their date on a low note.
“What do you mean by that?” Ross asked.
“I mean that your fathers are all suspects, even if two of them are dead,” Crew said. “I can’t rule them out until I see the registers for that night and any camera feeds that you might have.”
“What makes you think that you’ll find anything?” Zane asked.
“Because we’re getting a warrant to collect DNA from the woman,” Crew said. “But that’s all that I can tell you, for now.”
The three of them looked around the room as Crew grabbed Zane’s hand. “Ready?” he asked as though they weren’t just discussing a murder.
“What’s happening here?” Ross asked.
“I’m taking Zane out to dinner,” he said.
“Oh, well, you two have fun,” Ross said.
“Yeah, don’t do anything that we wouldn’t do,” Leo chimed in.
“You can both fuck off,” Zane grumbled as Crew led him out of the office. He wasn’t sure how the rest of the night was going to go, but it had sure gotten off to a crazy start.
Crew
Crew felt like a nervous teen boy all through dinner and when Zane asked him to come back to his place for the night, he thought for sure that his stomach was going to rebel against him. Maybe a heavy pasta dish wasn’t the smart way to go for dinner, but he also didn’t plan on Zane wanting to move so quickly. He offered to have Zane back to his place but was thankful when Zane insisted that they go to his house. He made the excuse that his house was closer, and that worked for Crew.
“Do you live around here?” Zane asked Crew after giving him directions back to his place.
“I live on the other side of town, near the precinct. My apartment is a tiny one bed, one bath and it’s pretty run down.” He shrugged, “The rent was cheap, and it didn’t matter what the place looked like because I was never home. My job kept me out all hours of the day and night, and when I finally went home it was usually to shower, shave, and sleep for a few hours.”
“I get it,” Zane said, “I had a place near my office and when I couldn’t take my neighbors playing music at all hours of the night, I decided that it was time to put down roots and buy aplace.” Crew was going to ask if Zane ever thought about having a family in his big house, but decided against it. He wasn’t even sure what a family would look like for him. He always thought that he’d eventually find a woman and a man who wanted the same things he did in life, but he never really looked for that, outside of his dreams. His work took up so much of his time, that he couldn’t really head out to a bar to pick up someone after working his nine to five. His hours were crazier than that and he was pretty sure that no one would put up with him being on call all the time.
Crew sat down on the sectional sofa in Zane’s family room and looked around. The house had an open floor plan, and he had to admit, he liked it. He could see himself in a place like this, but he was getting ahead of himself.
“What happens now, Zane?” Crew asked, ready to start the main show of the night. He loved getting to know Zane a little bit at dinner, he was looking forward to spending some one-on-one time with him.
“Now we can do whatever you’d like,” Zane breathed.
“Good,” Crew said. He grabbed Zane’s hand and pulled him down onto the sofa. “Do you prefer to be the top or the bottom?” he asked as Zane practically fell on top of him.
“Um, I’m kind of a switch I think,” Zane admitted.
“So, you can go either way?” Crew asked. He actually liked that in a man. He liked guys who were bossy but could also allow his partner to be in charge if that’s what he wanted.
Zane started to unbutton Crew’s shirt and slid his hand in to rub his chest. Zane’s hands were everywhere, and the way the guy kissed him felt like a personal touch. He slid his tongue into Crew’s mouth, and he couldn’t help but moan into Zane’s mouth.
“We need more room,” Crew said, “this sofa is too small for the two of us,” he said, hinting to Zane that he wanted to go up to the master bedroom.
